Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation targets the OpenID Connect RP-initiated logout endpoint /oauth2/connect/endSession, which accepts the id_token_hint JWT WITHOUT verifying its signature (CWE-347). The concrete prerequisites are: (1) the attacker forges an id_token_hint that references an existing realm OAuth2/OIDC client, and (2) the redirect destination must be a post_logout_redirect_uri already REGISTERED with that client - the attacker cannot redirect to an arbitrary unregistered URL, so a client with an attacker-influenced or overly permissive registered post-logout URI must exist. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the attack is unauthenticated (PR:N) but requires victim user interaction to click the crafted link (UI:P), carries high attack complexity and a present attack requirement (AC:H/AT:P), and affects only deployments running OpenAM before 16.1.3.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N) yields a base score of only 2.3 - network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N), but gated by high attack complexity (AC:H), a present attack requirement (AT:P), required user interaction (UI:P), and only low impact to confidentiality/integrity with no availability impact. The CWE-347 (improper signature verification) root cause is real - the id_token_hint JWT is accepted without verification - but the resulting primitive is an open redirect, not code execution or data theft. No EPSS score was provided; it is not in CISA KEV ('no public exploit identified at time of analysis'); and no POC is referenced. There is no conflict between the signals: a low CVSS, no KEV listing, and no POC all point the same direction. The practical value to an attacker is limited to lending the trusted OpenAM host's reputation to a phishing redirect, and the redirect target is constrained to URIs already registered with a realm client, which further caps impact. Treat as routine patch-cycle remediation, not emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a phishing link to OpenAM's /oauth2/connect/endSession endpoint carrying a forged, unverified id_token_hint that names a realm client whose registered post-logout redirect URI is attacker-influenced. A victim who clicks the link is logged out and silently redirected from the trusted OpenAM host to the attacker's page, which harvests credentials under the borrowed trust of the legitimate domain. No public exploit code is identified, and success requires the victim to click (UI:P) and a suitably registered post-logout URI (AC:H/AT:P).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 03, 2026

Open redirect in OpenIdentityPlatform OpenAM deployments prior to 16.1.3 lets unauthenticated attackers bounce victims from a trusted OpenAM host to a post-logout URI registered to a named realm client. The /oauth2/connect/endSession endpoint consumes the id_token_hint JWT without verifying its cryptographic signature (CWE-347), so an attacker can forge a hint that names any existing OAuth2/OIDC client in a realm and steer the logout response toward that client's registered post_logout_redirect_uri, producing phishing links that inherit the OpenAM server's trust. Exploitation requires victim user interaction (a clicked crafted link), carries high attack complexity with a present attack requirement, and is constrained because the destination must already be registered to the abused client; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and no KEV entry exists. Independent assessment rates this as a genuinely low-priority, internally consistent issue, consistent with the low CVSS 4.0 base score of 2.3.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade OpenAM to 16.1.3 or later, which is the version boundary stated in the CVE and the fixed release referenced by the vendor advisory (https://github.com/OpenIdentityPlatform/OpenAM/security/advisories/GHSA-6f8c-crwq-jqm3). Until upgrading, the most effective compensating control follows directly from the vulnerability's precondition: the attacker can only redirect to a URI already registered to a realm client, so audit every OAuth2/OIDC client registration and remove or tighten post_logout_redirect_uri values - eliminate wildcards, open redirectors, third-party or user-controlled destinations, and any stale entries - recognizing that this hardens only the deployment and does not fix the signature-verification defect itself. Additional options with their trade-offs: place an allowlist or reverse-proxy rule in front of /oauth2/connect/endSession to reject requests whose id_token_hint does not correspond to a legitimate session (risks breaking standards-compliant client-initiated logout), restrict network access to the OAuth2 endpoint where feasible (reduces exposure but may break federated clients), and add mail/URL filtering or user awareness controls against crafted logout links that arrive from the trusted OpenAM hostname (limited coverage, purely defensive). Note that because the redirect target must be pre-registered, deployments with tightly scoped client registrations face materially lower risk, which matches the low assessed severity.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerable component is OpenAM's OpenID Connect RP-initiated logout flow, specifically the /oauth2/connect/endSession endpoint, which accepts an id_token_hint parameter as a JWT. Per the OIDC specification, the hint is meant to identify the end user's session so OpenAM can select the correct client and validate the requested post_logout_redirect_uri against that client's registration. The implementation flaw is CWE-347 (Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature): the endpoint parses and trusts the claims inside the hint without validating the JWT's signature, which means the hint is attacker-controllable data rather than an authenticated assertion. Because the redirect target is resolved from the (forgeable) client identity in the hint rather than from a securely established session, an attacker who knows or guesses the identifier of a realm client can bind their forged hint to that client and be redirected to whatever post_logout_redirect_uri is registered for it. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:openidentityplatform:openam identifies the affected package across all versions preceding 16.1.3; the vulnerability is triggered over the network against the OAuth2/OIDC provider surface, and the required registration precondition means severity hinges on how permissive existing client post-logout URI registrations are.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenAM before 16.1.3 contains an open redirect vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to redirect users by supplying an unverified id_token_hint to the /oauth2/connect/endSession endpoint. Attackers can name any realm client in a forged hint to redirect victims to any registered post-logout URI, enabling phishing that borrows the OpenAM host's trust.
