MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires all of the following: (1) the victim's MISP instance subscribes to a TAXII server whose object content the attacker can publish to or influence; (2) the attacker crafts a TAXII object whose string properties contain HTML/JavaScript payloads; and (3) an authenticated MISP user (PR:L) with access to the TAXII object viewer must actively open/view that specific crafted object (UI:A required). Limiting factors: this is not remote-unauthenticated - the victim session must be logged in, user interaction is mandatory, and the attacker must sit within or compromise a TAXII feed the target trusts. These constraints make exploitation targeted rather than opportunistic, though versions below 2.5.48 in default configuration are vulnerable once those conditions are met. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity stored/reflected XSS (CWE-79) in MISP's TAXII object viewer, rated 6.2 by the vendor using a CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:H/SI:H/SA:N). The vector signals are internally consistent and realistic: network vector with low complexity, but exploitation is gated by two real constraints - PR:L means the victim session is an authenticated MISP user, and UI:A means the victim must actively open/view the malicious object. The high subsequent-system impact (SC:H/SI:H) correctly reflects that injected JavaScript runs in the victim's authenticated MISP browser context, enabling session/API-key theft and actions-on-behalf, while the vulnerable system itself shows no direct C/I/A impact (VC/VI/VA:N). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input; exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The practical priority is moderate rather than urgent: exploitation requires the attacker to influence content on a TAXII feed the target MISP actually subscribes to AND requires a logged-in analyst to view the crafted object, so this is a targeted, trust-chain-abuse scenario rather than mass-exploitable. A vendor patch exists and the one-line fix (wrapping json_encode output in MISP's h() HTML-encoder) is confirmed by the referenced commit, so remediation is straightforward and should be applied, but this does not rise to drop-everything emergency status absent evidence of active exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes a malicious TAXII object whose string properties embed HTML/JavaScript to a TAXII server that a victim organization's MISP instance subscribes to. When an authenticated MISP analyst opens that remote object in the TAXII object viewer, the unencoded JSON is rendered into the <pre> block and the script executes in their session, allowing theft of session tokens or API keys. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, but the fix commit publicly reveals the exact sink. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
Cross-site scripting (XSS) in MISP's TAXII object viewer (versions before 2.5.48) allows an attacker who can publish or influence TAXII objects to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the browser of an authenticated MISP user who views the crafted object. Exploitation requires the victim's MISP instance to subscribe to a malicious or compromised TAXII feed and the user to actively open the specific object, making it a targeted attack rather than opportunistic. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the vendor has released a patch in version 2.5.48.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to MISP version 2.5.48 or later, which contains the vendor-released patch (commit 1bed4ca0c) that HTML-encodes JSON output in the TAXII object viewer via the h() function. The commit is available at https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/1bed4ca0c and can be applied manually to app/View/Elements/genericElements/json.ctp if immediate upgrade is not possible. As a temporary compensating control, restrict access to the TAXII object viewer to trusted users only and ensure TAXII subscriptions are limited to highly trusted sources; however, these measures do not fully eliminate the risk as a compromised trusted source could still deliver a payload. No official workaround is documented beyond upgrading, and the patch is available.

MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) is an open-source threat intelligence platform that supports ingesting and viewing TAXII objects. TAXII is a protocol for exchanging cyber threat intelligence, and MISP's TAXII object viewer renders JSON content of string properties into an HTML pre block. Due to CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation, i.e., XSS), the JSON output was not HTML-encoded, allowing injection of arbitrary HTML or JavaScript. The fix (commit 1bed4ca0c) wraps the json_encode call with CakePHP's h() helper, which HTML-encodes the output, in the file app/View/Elements/genericElements/json.ctp. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms all versions prior to 2.5.48 are affected.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the TAXII object viewer. When displaying a remote TAXII object, the JSON content of string properties was rendered directly into an HTML pre block without HTML-encoding. An attacker who can control or influence the content of a TAXII object (e.g., by publishing a malicious object to a TAXII server that the victim's MISP instance subscribes to) can inject arbitrary HTML or JavaScript that executes in the context of the victim's MISP session.
Preconditions:
- The victim must be an authenticated MISP user with access to the TAXII object viewer.
- The victim must open or view the crafted TAXII object.
Impact:
- Execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the victim's browser within the MISP application context.
- Potential theft of session tokens, API keys, or other sensitive data accessible from the MISP interface.
- Potential for performing actions on behalf of the authenticated user.
Affected versions: <2.5.48.
