Remote unauthenticated attacker sends one crafted message with no interaction (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N); only availability is affected via stack exhaustion, so C:N/I:N/A:H.

4DescriptionCVE.org
The protocol skip routine in several Apache Thrift bindings did not apply the binding's recursion limit, so a message that nests unknown fields deeply enough can exhaust the stack. Affected: the Python C++ accelerator (the pure-Python protocols are not affected), the PHP library and its thrift_protocol extension, and the Perl, Lua, Smalltalk and OCaml libraries.
This issue affects Apache Thrift: before 0.25.0.
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 0.25.0, which fixes the issue.

AnalysisAI
Stack exhaustion in Apache Thrift before 0.25.0 allows remote, unauthenticated attackers to crash processes that deserialize attacker-controlled Thrift messages, because the protocol skip routine in several language bindings fails to apply the binding's recursion limit when skipping unknown fields. The affected bindings are the Python C++ accelerator (the pure-Python protocols are not affected), the PHP library and its thrift_protocol extension, and the Perl, Lua, Smalltalk and OCaml libraries; the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms the bug is reachable over the network with no privileges or user interaction, but the impact metrics (VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) restrict the consequence to availability loss. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The target application must use one of the affected Apache Thrift bindings - the Python C++ accelerator (NOT the pure-Python protocols), the PHP library or its thrift_protocol extension, or the Perl, Lua, Smalltalk, or OCaml libraries - and must deserialize attacker-controlled Thrift messages (e.g. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a remote, unauthenticated denial-of-service flaw, not a code-execution or data-exposure bug: the provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms it is trivially reachable over the network with no privileges or user interaction, but the impact metrics (VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) show the only consequence is availability loss via stack exhaustion (CWE-674, uncontrolled recursion). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: Apache Thrift 0.25.0, which reinstates the recursion limit in the affected skip routines; upgrade the Apache Thrift runtime and, critically, the language-specific library in use (the Python C++ accelerator package, the PHP library plus thrift_protocol extension, and the Perl, Lua, Smalltalk or OCaml bindings) rather than only the compiler or code generator, since the vulnerable parser ships with the runtime binding. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory every service, agent, and internal tool that embeds Apache Thrift and determine which use the Python C++ accelerator, PHP library or thrift_protocol extension, Perl, Lua, Smalltalk, or OCaml bindings, since the pure-Python protocols are not affected; treat any internet- or partner-facing Thrift listener as the top priority. …
