| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Ghost administrator account (CVSS PR:H) - the attacker must be able to modify the locale/language setting that drives theme translation file loading. Exploitation works against affected versions (1.20.0 up to but not including 6.64.0) by injecting path-traversal sequences into the locale value so the translation loader resolves a JSON file outside the active theme directory. Limiting factors: impact is confined to reading JSON-format files (not arbitrary file types or write/RCE), it needs the high-privilege admin role rather than anonymous access, and it is remediated in Ghost 6.64.0; the practical payoff depends on sensitive JSON (e.g., config/secrets) being present and readable on the server filesystem. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-risk, administrator-gated information-disclosure flaw rather than a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) scores 6.9 (medium) and is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable but requiring high privileges (PR:H = authenticated administrator), low complexity, no user interaction, and pure confidentiality impact with no integrity or availability effect. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or SSVC decision data was provided in the input, and no public exploit is referenced - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The real-world priority is tempered sharply by the PR:H requirement: an attacker must already hold admin credentials on the Ghost instance, which greatly narrows the threat population to insiders, compromised admin accounts, or multi-tenant/shared-admin setups. The notable escalation value is that an already-privileged admin can read JSON files outside the theme directory (e.g., configuration containing secrets), potentially yielding database credentials, mail/API keys, or session secrets that enable lateral movement or full environment compromise. Net: patch promptly in environments where admin access is broadly or semi-trustedly delegated, but this is not a mass-exploitation, internet-wide drive-by risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Ghost administrator (or an attacker who has phished/compromised an admin session) sets the site or theme locale to a crafted value that uses path-traversal sequences, causing Ghost's theme translation loader to read a JSON file outside the active theme directory. The attacker retrieves a configuration or secrets file on the server, harvesting credentials or API keys for further compromise. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and because the vector is network-based with low complexity and no user interaction, exploitation is straightforward once admin access is held. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
Path traversal in Ghost's theme translation loader (CWE-22) lets an authenticated administrator read JSON files outside the active theme directory by tampering with the locale/language setting, potentially exposing server configuration secrets. All Ghost releases from 1.20.0 up to but not including 6.64.0 are affected; the flaw requires a high-privilege admin account (CVSS 4.0 6.9 / assessed CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) and yields read-only disclosure of JSON-format files - no write, no code execution. There is no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV not listed) and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; a vendor patch is available in 6.64.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Ghost to 6.64.0 or later - the vendor-released fix for this issue - following the guidance in GHSA-m382-6jw4-fmp6 (https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/security/advisories/GHSA-m382-6jw4-fmp6) and the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/ghost-1.20.0-before-6.64.0-path-traversal-via-locale-setting); patching is low-risk and should be prioritized on internet-facing installations. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls with their trade-offs in mind: restrict Ghost admin/staff accounts to the smallest possible set of trusted users and enforce strong MFA on those accounts, since the exploit requires an authenticated administrator (PR:H) - this reduces the attack surface but does not eliminate the flaw for legitimate admins. Audit and monitor changes to theme locale/language settings and theme configuration for traversal characters, and alert on unexpected admin setting changes; logging is detective, not preventive. As a data-exposure mitigation, keep sensitive JSON artifacts (cloud credentials, service-account keys, API tokens, backup manifests) outside directories readable by the Ghost process account and tighten filesystem permissions on the Ghost user so traversal cannot reach them - this limits the payoff but requires an inventory of JSON secrets on the host and may break legitimate integrations. Do not rely on WAF locale-parameter filtering alone, as the value flows through application settings rather than a simple HTTP parameter.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Ghost is a Node.js-based open-source publishing platform whose themes can ship translation strings as JSON locale files. When rendering a theme, the translation loader resolves the active locale into a file path under the theme's locales directory. CVE-2026-104417 is a classic CWE-22 improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory: the locale value is not sufficiently normalized/validated before being combined with the theme base path, so traversal sequences (e.g., ../) in the locale setting cause the loader to resolve and read JSON files elsewhere on the filesystem. Because only JSON parsing/serving is involved, the primitive is limited to file read of JSON content - it does not give arbitrary file-type reads, file writes, or remote code execution. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:tryghost:ghost:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with the version range fixed at 6.64.0, and the issue is tracked by EUVD-2026-91428 and reported by VulnCheck.

Ghost from 1.20.0 before 6.64.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability in theme translation file loading that allows authenticated administrators to read JSON files outside the active theme directory. Attackers can manipulate the locale setting to load JSON files elsewhere on the server, exposing server configuration secrets.
