| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the mod_dav WebDAV module to be loaded and enabled, and the attacker must hold an account with permission to create WebDAV locks (consistent with PR:L) - this is not reachable against a default Apache install, which does not enable WebDAV. The limiting factors are significant: no anonymous access (authenticated lock-creation privilege required), impact confined to crashing child processes (availability only, no data exposure or code execution), and dependence on a non-default server configuration where WebDAV with lock support is deployed. Servers without mod_dav enabled are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-urgency issue, best characterized as a high-visibility-product but modest-impact flaw rather than a top priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, base 4.3) scores availability-only impact with no confidentiality or integrity loss, and crucially requires PR:L - the attacker must already hold permission to create WebDAV locks, so this is authenticated abuse, not anonymous exploitation. CISA's SSVC framing agrees it is low priority: Exploitation=none, Automatable=no, Technical Impact=partial. There is no public exploit and no KEV listing (no public exploit identified at time of analysis), and no EPSS score was supplied so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input. All signals are consistent and point the same direction - a real, patchable denial-of-service bug limited to crashing child processes, reachable only by users already trusted to write WebDAV locks. Note one input discrepancy: the description says 'httpd 2.4.67 and earlier' while the EUVD affected-version field says '≤2.4.68' - verify the exact last-affected version against the vendor advisory before gating remediation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already has credentials permitting WebDAV lock creation sends a crafted LOCK request to a mod_dav-enabled Apache httpd instance, triggering a faulty memory-size calculation (CWE-789) that crashes the handling child process. Repeating this degrades or denies service to other users. No public exploit code is known, and the attack cannot proceed without valid lock-creation permission. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Denial of service in the mod_dav module of Apache HTTP Server 2.4.67 and earlier (EUVD lists affected versions as up to and including 2.4.68) allows remote attackers who hold an account permitted to create WebDAV locks to crash server child processes, degrading or interrupting service availability. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, score 4.3) confirms the attacker must be authenticated with lock-creation privileges and that impact is limited to availability - there is no data exposure, integrity loss, or code execution. Only servers that have loaded and enabled mod_dav with lock support are reachable, so default Apache installations are not affected; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis (CISA SSVC records Exploitation: none, Automatable: no). Vendor-released patch: Apache HTTP Server 2.4.69.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Apache HTTP Server 2.4.69, which the vendor states fixes this issue (https://httpd.apache.org/security/vulnerabilities_24.html). Where upgrading cannot be done immediately, the most effective compensating control is to remove the exposure entirely: unload or disable mod_dav on hosts that do not serve WebDAV, or, on hosts that do, remove or leave unconfigured the DavLockDB directive (without a lock database Apache rejects locking, so the affected code path is unreachable) - the trade-off is that WebDAV clients such as Office, macOS Finder and many sync tools will fail on LOCK and fall back to read-only or error behavior. Additionally, restrict who can create locks: wrap DAV-enabled locations in a <LimitExcept LOCK UNLOCK> style policy or a Require rule that permits only trusted, authenticated principals (the vector's PR:L means an authenticated low-privileged account is sufficient to trigger the crash), and where feasible place DAV endpoints behind a reverse proxy or access layer that limits the request rate so a crash of individual child processes cannot be sustained into a service-wide outage. Note that SSVC records Automatable: no, so broad opportunistic scanning is not expected, and the risk is best treated as low-urgency rather than emergency patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details
mod_dav is the Apache HTTP Server module that implements the WebDAV protocol, extending HTTP with methods such as LOCK, UNLOCK, PROPFIND and PUT so that clients can treat the web server as a writable file store. WebDAV locking requires the server to track lock state per resource, and the shape of that state is derived from client-supplied LOCK requests, so the module performs memory-size arithmetic when allocating and updating lock bookkeeping. CWE-789 (Memory Allocation with Excessive Size Value) describes the underlying flaw class: a miscalculation in that size computation can cause an oversized allocation request, which effectively terminates the handling child process rather than exposing memory corruption or enabling code execution. Because Apache's process model forks worker/child processes to serve requests, the fault is contained to individual children and manifests as intermittent request failures, connection resets and reduced capacity rather than a full crash of the parent listener. Exploitation requires the mod_dav module to be loaded and configured with a working lock database (DavLockDB); neither is enabled in a default Apache httpd build, and the CVSS vector's PR:L reflects that a valid account with permission to create WebDAV locks is a prerequisite.
