The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the target device to read and parse an attacker-supplied SquashFS filesystem image via U-Boot's SquashFS support (fs/squashfs/sqfs.c) during or after boot. The attacker must control the SquashFS superblock's metablks_count field, which realistically means placing a crafted image on boot media or a filesystem the bootloader reads - hence the vendor's physical attack vector (AV:P). Limiting factors: exploitation depends on SquashFS support being compiled/enabled and actually invoked against untrusted media, and no network path exists; impact is confined to heap corruption and a bootloader crash (denial of service) rather than confidentiality loss.

Impact

This is a genuine-but-bounded memory-corruption flaw whose real-world urgency is limited by its attack vector, not its impact. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:P/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H) scores only 5.2 (medium) because exploitation is rated as requiring PHYSICAL access - the crafted SquashFS image must be presented to the bootloader on boot media rather than over a network, which sharply narrows the practical threat model versus U-Boot's network-facing siblings (netboot NFS/DHCP/wget flaws). Technical impact is availability-dominant: the integer overflow (metablks_count × SQFS_METADATA_BLOCK_SIZE) yields a heap under-allocation and subsequent out-of-bounds writes that corrupt the heap and crash the bootloader (VA:H), with only limited integrity impact (VI:L) and no confidentiality loss (VC:N). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Signals are internally consistent (low probability, physical vector, DoS-class impact), so this is a legitimate patch-management item rather than an emergency - the medium score is honest, not inflated. The one point to verify: while the vendor asserts AV:P, an attacker who can already write to a mounted filesystem/partition read by U-Boot could trigger this locally (AV:L), so treat the boundary between physical and local as deployment-dependent.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can supply boot media or write a filesystem image the bootloader will read (e.g. a malicious USB stick, SD card, or a tampered partition) crafts a SquashFS image with an oversized superblock metablks_count value. When U-Boot parses the directory table, the size multiplication overflows and malloc under-allocates, so the subsequent copy writes out of bounds and corrupts the heap, crashing the bootloader. No public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

Heap under-allocation in U-Boot's SquashFS directory-table parser (fs/squashfs/sqfs.c) allows an attacker who supplies a crafted SquashFS filesystem image to trigger out-of-bounds heap writes and crash the bootloader, producing a denial of service during or after boot. All U-Boot releases before 2026.10-rc4 that are compiled with SquashFS support are affected, and exploitation requires the device to read and parse an attacker-controlled image from boot media, which is why the vendor treats this as a physical/local-vector issue (CVSS 4.0 base 5.2; the independent assessment rates it CVSS 3.1 AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the flaw was reported by VulnCheck alongside a vendor fix commit.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to U-Boot 2026.10-rc4 or later, which contains the upstream fix; the specific change is commit 561ae28cb56a082cfa90c1c421c4955bc215470b, which adds __builtin_mul_overflow() checks around both the directory-table and position-list allocations (references: https://github.com/u-boot/u-boot/commit/561ae28cb56a082cfa90c1c421c4955bc215470b and https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/u-boot-before-2026.10-rc4-integer-overflow-in-squashfs-directory-table-allocation). Because patching boot firmware is operationally slow, backporting this single commit to the vendor's maintained release branch is the practical route for embedded products. Where an upgrade is not immediately possible, the most effective compensating control is to compile U-Boot without SquashFS support (drop CONFIG_FS_SQUASHFS); the trade-off is that the platform can no longer mount or boot a SquashFS rootfs or recovery image, so this only suits designs that do not depend on SquashFS. Additionally, enforce integrity of anything the bootloader reads: enable verified boot / signed FIT images (CONFIG_FIT_SIGNATURE with a trusted key in the device tree) so a crafted SquashFS image is rejected before the vulnerable parser runs, at the cost of key-management overhead and a hard failure if signing keys are lost. Physical write protection of boot media (soldered/eMMC boot partitions, OTP or write-protected SPI flash, secure-boot fuse policy) removes the attacker's ability to substitute the image and is the natural mitigation given the physical attack vector, but it does not help against devices whose boot media can already be reprogrammed by an adversary. Note that no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so these measures are precautionary hardening rather than emergency mitigations.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is an integer overflow (CWE-190) in sqfs_read_directory_table(), the routine that allocates and fills the SquashFS directory table in U-Boot's fs/squashfs driver. The function reads the superblock's metablks_count field - an attacker-controlled value - and previously computed the allocation size as 'metablks_count * SQFS_METADATA_BLOCK_SIZE' with a plain multiplication. When metablks_count is chosen so the product wraps around in the u32/size_t arithmetic, malloc() receives a much smaller size than the subsequent read/write loop expects, so parsing the crafted image writes past the end of the heap buffer; a second allocation, '*pos_list = malloc(metablks_count * sizeof(u32))', is subject to the same wrapping. The upstream patch replaces both multiplications with __builtin_mul_overflow() checks and bails out (setting metablks_count to an error value and jumping to the cleanup path) when either product overflows, so no undersized buffer is ever allocated. The affected code lives in the bootloader's filesystem layer, meaning the vulnerable path is reached whenever U-Boot's SquashFS support is compiled in and a SquashFS image is mounted or scanned; there is no network-facing component and no confidentiality impact in the provided vectors, only heap corruption and a crash.

DescriptionCVE.org

U-Boot before 2026.10-rc4 contains an integer overflow vulnerability in sqfs_read_directory_table() function when allocating the directory table buffer. Attackers can supply a crafted SquashFS image with an attacker-controlled superblock metablks_count value that causes heap buffer under-allocation and out-of-bounds writes, corrupting heap memory and crashing the bootloader.
