Vulnerability Assessment

Weakness
CWE
Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the MediaWiki instance runs the DataTransfer extension (1.46.0-1.46.x) and exposes a path that accepts attacker-controlled spreadsheet files, so that PHPSpreadsheet's IOFactory/automatic format detection invokes Reader\Xls::canRead() → OLERead::read(). The trigger is a malformed .xls/OLE file whose small-block-depot (or other) sector chain references a previously visited sector (e.g., sector 0 mapping to sector 0), causing an unbounded chain-walk loop with no cycle detection or iteration cap. No authentication is indicated by the CVSS vector (PR:N) and no user interaction is required (UI:N); the primary limiting factor is whether untrusted users can actually submit spreadsheets to the import/detection pipeline, and whether PHP memory_limit and process isolation bound the blast radius. Fixed in extension 1.47.0 (upstream PhpSpreadsheet fixes include 5.8.1/3.10.7/2.4.7/2.1.18).

Impact

This is a denial-of-service vulnerability (CWE-1395, dependency on a vulnerable third-party component - PHPSpreadsheet's OLERead) whose CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, score 7.5 HIGH) reflects a pure availability impact with no confidentiality or integrity loss. Signals are largely consistent in pointing to a real-but-moderate concern rather than an urgent one: SSVC marks Exploitation as 'poc', Automatable 'yes', and Technical Impact 'partial', and a detailed GHSA advisory (GHSA-xh5m-36r6-47m3) with a proof-of-concept confirms a 1 KiB malformed XLS/OLE file triggers unbounded memory allocation. However, EPSS is only 0.15% (4th percentile), it is NOT listed in CISA KEV, and there is no evidence of active exploitation, so real-world mass exploitation probability is currently low. A notable conflict exists in the metadata: the issue is tagged 'Information Disclosure', but the CVSS vector sets C:N/I:N with A:H and the advisory describes memory exhaustion only - this is a DoS, not information disclosure, so the tag is mislabeled. Also note the 'network, no-interaction' rating assumes the application exposes attacker-controlled spreadsheet upload/import; the DataTransfer extension's import functionality makes this plausible by design, but exploitability depends on whether that import path is reachable by untrusted users - verify per deployment.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker uploads a tiny (~1 KiB) malformed .xls/OLE file to a MediaWiki instance whose DataTransfer extension imports spreadsheets, where PHPSpreadsheet's automatic format detection calls OLERead::read(). The crafted small-block-depot sector chain points back to itself, so the reader appends the same sector data in an infinite loop until the PHP process exhausts memory and the request (and potentially the worker) crashes. A public proof-of-concept exists in the GHSA advisory demonstrating the self-looping sector chain.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026

Denial of service in the MediaWiki DataTransfer extension 1.46.0 through 1.46.x allows remote unauthenticated attackers to exhaust PHP process memory by submitting a tiny malformed .xls/OLE spreadsheet that triggers an unbounded sector-chain loop in the bundled PHPSpreadsheet library's OLERead component. The flaw is reachable through automatic spreadsheet type detection (Reader\Xls::canRead) whenever the extension processes attacker-controlled files; the CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5 HIGH) confirms no authentication or user interaction is required and that only availability is impacted. Publicly available exploit code exists per SSVC (Exploitation: poc) even though no CISA KEV confirmed exploitation has been reported, and EPSS is low at 0.15% (percentile 4); vendor patches are available, with the extension fixed in 1.47.0 and upstream PHPSpreadsheet fixed in 5.8.1, 3.10.7, 2.4.7, and 2.1.18.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade the MediaWiki DataTransfer extension to 1.47.0, which incorporates the fixed upstream PHPSpreadsheet code; if the extension is managed as a Composer dependency, also ensure PHPSpreadsheet is updated to a fixed release (5.8.1, 3.10.7, 2.4.7, or 2.1.18) and apply the upstream commit 85f2556b0bf5269061bf45932ecda8a128d81750. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict the ability of untrusted users to submit spreadsheets to import/detection endpoints (for example, remove the DataTransfer extension temporarily if it is not business-critical, or disable the affected spreadsheet import feature); this eliminates exposure but removes legitimate import/export functionality. Enforce a low PHP memory_limit and request timeouts for PHP-FPM workers, and isolate the MediaWiki process so that a memory-exhaustion event cannot take down other services; note that aggressive memory limits may cause denial of service for legitimate large spreadsheets and do not fix the underlying unbounded loop. Monitoring for high memory usage or worker restarts after spreadsheet uploads can provide early warning. Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-1395 (dependency on a vulnerable third-party component) combined with uncontrolled resource consumption in PHPSpreadsheet's OLE compound-document reader. PHPSpreadsheet is a PHP library used to read and write spreadsheet formats; MediaWiki's DataTransfer extension depends on it for spreadsheet import/export functionality. When a file is submitted, PHPSpreadsheet's IOFactory automatic format detection calls Reader\Xls::canRead(), which in turn calls OLERead::read(). The OLE reader builds sector chains from attacker-controlled header and allocation-table values, and specifically follows the small-block depot sector chain in a while loop that has no visited-sector set, no maximum iteration count, no EOF bound, and no check that the next sector differs from a previously visited sector. If a malformed .xls file maps sector 0 to sector 0, the loop appends the same sector data indefinitely until the PHP process exhausts memory. Similar unbounded walks exist in later stream-reading code paths within OLERead.php, so the fix must address all sector-chain traversals. The affected product CPE is cpe:2.3:a:wikimedia_foundation:mediawiki_-_datatransfer_extension:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and the upstream vulnerable PHPSpreadsheet ranges are >=4.0.0 <=5.8.0, >=3.3.0 <=3.10.6, >=2.2.0 <=2.4.6, and >=2.0.0 <=2.1.17; the upstream patch commit is 85f2556b0bf5269061bf45932ecda8a128d81750, and the GHSA advisory is GHSA-xh5m-36r6-47m3.

Dependency on Vulnerable Third-Party Component and Uncontrolled Resource Consumption vulnerability in Wikimedia Foundation Mediawiki - DataTransfer Extension allows Excessive Allocation.

This issue affects Mediawiki - DataTransfer Extension: from 1.46.0 before 1.47.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

MediaWiki deployments running the DataTransfer extension 1.46.0 through 1.46.x face a high-severity denial-of-service exposure that can make wiki services unavailable to users. The attack is remote and unauthenticated, and publicly available exploit code exists, so any internet-facing or broadly accessible wiki is at risk of service disruption that could interrupt documentation, collaboration, and operational workflows. Vendor patches are available, and leadership should prioritize remediation to reduce downtime risk.
