Attacker-supplied schema is typically delivered over the network to a parsing endpoint with no auth or interaction; availability-only stack-overflow DoS, so C:N/I:N/A:H.
vuln.today treats the vendor’s rating as authoritative. A higher third-party CVSS (e.g. CISA-ADP) is shown for transparency but does not drive the headline severity.

Apache XmlSchema doesn't limit how deeply schema structures can be nested when it builds its schema model, so a malicious schema can make parsing recurse until the stack overflows. This causes a denial of service. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 2.3.3, which fixes this issue.

AnalysisAI
Stack exhaustion in Apache XmlSchema allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by supplying a malicious XML Schema (XSD) document with deeply nested structures that recurse until the parsing thread's stack overflows. The library is a Java component, so exposure depends entirely on the host application accepting and parsing externally supplied schemas - deployments that only process trusted, internally authored schemas are not affected, and no authentication or user interaction is inherent to the flaw. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires the deploying application to parse an attacker-controlled XML Schema document (XSD, or a WSDL that embeds/imports schema) through Apache XmlSchema's schema-model builder; the malicious schema must contain deeply nested structures sufficient to exhaust the thread stack. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is an availability-only denial-of-service in Apache XmlSchema (a Java XML Schema model library), caused by unbounded recursion when building the schema model from deeply nested structures, leading to stack exhaustion (CWE-674-style uncontrolled recursion). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading Apache XmlSchema to version 2.3.3 or later, as directed by the Apache advisory at https://lists.apache.org/thread/9z1vg8wmvwpfw748fb2nb55w4hgbnxol; where XmlSchema is pulled in transitively, update the parent framework or override the dependency version and confirm via a dependency scan that no vulnerable copy remains on the classpath (note that forcing a version bump can break API compatibility with older consumers). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
