Apache ActiveMQ Artemis before 2.34.0 contains an unsafe reflection vulnerability in FederationStreamConnectMessage.getFederationPolicy(). The method calls Class.forName(clazz).getConstructor().newInstance() where clazz is read directly from the CORE protocol wire buffer without type validation. An authenticated federation peer can send a FEDERATION_DOWNSTREAM_CONNECT packet with a crafted class name, causing the broker to load and instantiate arbitrary classes visible to the Artemis module classloader. Static initializers (<clinit>) and no-argument constructors (<init>()) execute as side effects before the type cast, enabling denial of service via system-property poisoning, out-of-memory conditions via classloading, or broker state manipulation.

AnalysisAI
Authenticated federation peers can cause denial of service and broker state manipulation in Apache ActiveMQ Artemis before 2.34.0 by sending a crafted FEDERATION_DOWNSTREAM_CONNECT packet that forces the broker to load and instantiate arbitrary classes visible to the Artemis module classloader. The vulnerability arises from unsafe reflection (CWE-470) in FederationStreamConnectMessage.getFederationPolicy(), which passes an unvalidated class name from the CORE protocol wire buffer to Class.forName(). …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires the broker to have federation configured with downstream connections enabled (non-default deployment feature) AND the attacker to be an authenticated federation peer able to send CORE-protocol FEDERATION_DOWNSTREAM_CONNECT packets. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (8.2, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H) rates this High, but it internally conflicts with the description, which explicitly requires 'an authenticated federation peer' - PR:N is therefore almost certainly wrong; a PR:L assessment lowers the practical severity. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to Apache ActiveMQ Artemis 2.34.0 or later, which includes the fix for the unsafe reflection in FederationStreamConnectMessage.getFederationPolicy(). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory every Apache ActiveMQ Artemis deployment and confirm which instances run versions earlier than 2.34.0, then immediately restrict federation traffic - disable FEDERATION_DOWNSTREAM_CONNECT acceptance on brokers that do not genuinely require federation, and for those that do, whitelist only named, trusted federation peers at the network and broker level so unknown sources cannot reach the CORE protocol listener. …
