| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the target site to run Paymattic 4.6.20-4.6.25 with the Stripe payment gateway configured and at least one pending (unpaid) order available to hijack. The attacker must be able to create and confirm their own (smaller, real/chargeable) Stripe payment and direct that confirmation at the victim order, so exploitation carries a real payment cost and depends on Stripe being the active gateway. No authentication or user interaction is needed (PR:N/UI:N), and it is exploitable remotely over the network, but the Stripe-gateway-plus-pending-order preconditions meaningfully limit real-world applicability versus a truly unconditional default-config flaw. |
| Impact | The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, score 5.3) is internally consistent with the description: a remote, unauthenticated attacker (PR:N) can trigger the flaw over the network with low complexity and no user interaction, producing a low integrity impact (I:L) and no confidentiality or availability impact. This is a business-logic / payment-integrity flaw (CWE-345-style insufficient verification that a confirmed Stripe payment belongs to the order it is applied to), not information disclosure - so the 'Information Disclosure' tag is mislabeled. Real-world risk is moderate-but-targeted rather than mass-scannable: publicly available exploit code exists (WPScan), but there is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no SSVC data supplied, so there is no signal of widespread automated exploitation. Exploitation is not fully unconditional despite PR:N - it requires the specific target to run the Stripe gateway, have a pending order to hijack, and the attacker to complete a smaller real (chargeable) payment against it, which introduces cost and setup friction. Net: a legitimate financial-fraud integrity issue worth patching, but its niche plugin footprint and preconditions keep effective priority LOW rather than the alarm implied by 'unauthenticated network' alone. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker identifies a pending (unpaid) order on a store running Paymattic 4.6.20-4.6.25 with the Stripe gateway enabled, then initiates and confirms their own smaller Stripe payment, pointing the confirmation at the victim order's identifier. Because the plugin never verifies the confirmed payment actually belongs to that order, the pending order is marked fully paid, letting the attacker obtain goods/services or a donation credit far exceeding what they paid. Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 28, 2026
An unauthenticated payment-verification bypass in the Paymattic WordPress plugin (versions 4.6.20 through 4.6.25) lets attackers mark arbitrary pending orders as paid without actually paying the order's amount. The plugin fails to confirm that a Stripe payment belongs to the order it is being applied to, so an attacker can complete a small, genuine Stripe payment of their own and redirect that confirmation at a victim's pending order, obtaining goods or services for a fraction of the price. Publicly available exploit code exists and the flaw is remotely exploitable with no authentication or user interaction (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, 5.3), though real-world applicability is constrained by the requirement that Stripe be the active gateway and that a pending order be available to hijack.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Paymattic to 4.6.26 or later, which is the fixed version per the advisory (https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/240a0440-7892-4c03-b282-2fdb6f086bb6/); confirm the update landed by checking the plugin version in the WordPress admin. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable the Stripe payment gateway in Paymattic and switch to another configured gateway until patching is complete - the trade-off is loss of Stripe checkout and any Stripe-specific features, but it removes the exploitable code path entirely. Where Stripe must remain live, manually reconcile all Stripe payment records against Paymattic order totals and fulfillment status, and treat any paid order whose captured payment amount is lower than the order total as fraudulent; this is operationally intensive and only detects abuse after the fact rather than preventing it. Also restrict or disable automatic fulfillment of orders whose paid state derives solely from a Stripe confirmation until patched, and monitor Stripe webhook/confirmation logs for payments whose amount or customer does not match the associated order.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Paymattic is a WordPress payment and donation form plugin that integrates with gateways such as Stripe. Underlying the issue is a broken trust boundary between a gateway payment confirmation and the internal order record: when Stripe reports a successful payment (via webhook or confirmation flow), the plugin updates order state without validating that the confirmed payment's identity, amount, and metadata actually correspond to the order being marked paid. This is an authorization/business-logic validation gap rather than a memory-safety or injection flaw - effectively CWE-345/CWE-840 style insufficient verification of authenticity and insufficient business-logic validation - which is why the CVSS vector yields a low integrity-only impact (I:L) while confidentiality and availability are unaffected. The CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:unknown:paymattic:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a generic wildcard entry and does not narrow the affected build, so version scoping must come from the vendor/disclosure data: 4.6.20 up to but not including 4.6.26. The attack surface is the public-facing checkout/confirmation path, reachable over the network; because the CVSS vector contains PR:N and UI:N, exploitation requires neither an account on the target site nor any action by a legitimate user.

2DescriptionCVE.org
The Paymattic WordPress plugin from 4.6.20 before 4.6.26 does not verify that a confirmed Stripe payment belongs to the order it is applied to, allowing unauthenticated users to mark an arbitrary pending order as paid by confirming a smaller payment of their own against it.
