MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the rabbitmq_auth_backend_ldap plugin is enabled AND configured with a user_dn_pattern that contains the ${username} placeholder (the injectable substitution point). Additionally, the target directory layout must be such that the attacker's injected DN suffix resolves to a useful alternate entry, and the attacker must possess a password that is valid for that resulting DN. These are non-default, deployment-specific prerequisites: standard RabbitMQ installations without the LDAP backend, or LDAP configurations that do not template the username directly into the DN, are not exploitable. The combination of required directory conditions and a valid password is reflected in the CVSS AC:H and AT:P metrics. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but narrowly-conditioned LDAP DN injection (CWE-90), not the high-priority issue a raw score might imply. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (6.3, AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable but high attack complexity (AC:H) and an attack requirement (AT:P) reflect that exploitation depends on a specific directory layout in which the injected DN suffix resolves usefully. Critically, the attacker must also supply a password valid for the resulting DN, which sharply constrains real-world abuse - this is closer to authorization-boundary manipulation by someone with partial LDAP-valid credentials than to unauthenticated compromise. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Confidentiality and availability impact are rated none; only limited integrity (VI:L) applies. The signals do not conflict on severity, but the input DOES contain a material data conflict on remediation: the advisory body lists fixed versions 3.13.15 / 4.0.20 / 4.1.11, while structured metadata lists 3.13.18 / 4.0.23 / 4.1.14 (both agree only on 4.2.9 and 4.3.3). Per the advisory itself, no fixed-version assertion for the 3.13/4.0/4.1 lines is certifiable until a curator resolves this - patch guidance for those lines must be verified with the vendor. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach the RabbitMQ authentication endpoint and holds a password that will validate against some alternate directory entry submits a username containing RFC 4514 DN metacharacters (e.g. a comma-delimited suffix). Because fill/2 substitutes ${username} into user_dn_pattern without DN escaping, the crafted suffix rewrites the bind DN so the bind resolves to a different, attacker-chosen directory entry. No public proof-of-concept is available, and success additionally requires a directory layout where the injected suffix is meaningful. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
LDAP distinguished-name injection in the RabbitMQ rabbitmq_auth_backend_ldap plugin allows a remote, unauthenticated caller to manipulate the DN used for an LDAP bind by supplying a crafted username, because the ${username} placeholder is substituted into user_dn_pattern without RFC 4514 escaping. Impact is limited to integrity (CVSS:4.0 6.3 / CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) and exploitation is narrowly conditioned: the plugin must be enabled, user_dn_pattern must actually contain ${username}, the injected suffix must resolve to a useful directory entry, and the attacker must hold a password valid for that resulting DN. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis; upstream fix commits and patched releases exist, though the advisory's first-fixed version metadata is internally inconsistent for several maintenance lines.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a fixed RabbitMQ release: the input data provides two conflicting patch-version sets, with the advisory body listing 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.9 and 4.3.3, while structured metadata lists 3.13.18, 4.0.23, 4.1.14, 4.2.9 and 4.3.3. The 4.2.9 and 4.3.3 versions are corroborated by referenced release tags (https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/releases/tag/v4.2.9 and https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/releases/tag/v4.3.3), so those two are the safest patch targets to cite; for the 3.13, 4.0 and 4.1 lines the correct first-fixed version is not certifiable from this data and must be confirmed with the vendor before relying on it. Upstream fixes are also present as commits ad3ca47accd313a4a0dbcbbe17bf60fc8f4b2614 (introducing rabbit_ldap_rfc4514 and switching fill/2 call sites to fill_dn/2) and b54056e59b7fd3a2d7f07dfaba95f026e138eee8; these are upstream fixes (PR/commit), and released patched versions are independently confirmed only for the two tagged lines above. If upgrading is not immediately possible, remove ${username} from user_dn_pattern and the in_group/in_group_nested/string DN templates so no untrusted value reaches a DN position (side effect: per-user DN resolution must be expressed via a static pattern or a bind/search lookup, which may not fit all directory layouts); alternatively disable the rabbitmq_auth_backend_ldap plugin or fall back to a non-LDAP authentication backend (side effect: loss of LDAP-based user and group authorization). Restricting network access to the AMQP listeners to trusted clients reduces exposure but does not fix the underlying injection, and reverting to an unpatched build reintroduces it.

Technical ContextAI · show details
RabbitMQ's LDAP authentication backend (rabbitmq_auth_backend_ldap, Erlang/OTP) builds bind DNs by calling fill/2, a generic template formatter, to substitute values such as ${username} into configured patterns including user_dn_pattern. Because fill/2 performed raw string substitution, LDAP DN metacharacters in a username were passed through unescaped, exposing the code to CWE-90 (improper neutralization of special elements used in an LDAP query / DN injection). A comma or similar separator in the username can introduce an additional RDN, shifting the constructed bind DN to a different directory entry. The vendor fix introduces a new module, rabbit_ldap_rfc4514, which implements RFC 4514 value escaping (backslash-escaping of , + " \ < > ; and NUL, plus leading space/
and trailing space) and exposes escape_value/1 and fill_dn/2; all DN-producing call sites (for, in_group, in_group_nested, string, username_to_dn, simple_bind_fill_pattern) were switched from fill/2 to fill_dn/2. The user_dn key is deliberately excluded from escaping because it already holds a complete DN rather than a single attribute value. The CVSS:4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N, VC:N/VI:L/VA:N, no subsequent-system impact) and the CVSS:3.1 counterpart (S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) both describe a low-integrity, network-reachable, unauthenticated vector with high attack complexity; the supplied tags mention Denial Of Service, but neither the patch content nor the assessed metrics support an availability or code-execution impact, and the root cause here is name/DN manipulation rather than remote code execution.

2DescriptionCVE.org
RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. The advisory establishes affected 3.13, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 maintenance lines but contains conflicting first-fixed versions for the 3.13, 4.0, and 4.1 lines. fill/2 substitutes ${username} into user_dn_pattern without RFC 4514 DN escaping, allowing a crafted username to alter the LDAP bind DN and potentially select a different directory entry. Exploitation requires rabbitmq_auth_backend_ldap with a user_dn_pattern containing ${username}, a directory layout in which the injected suffix resolves usefully, and a password valid for the resulting DN. The advisory body identifies 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.9, and 4.3.3 as fixed, while structured metadata identifies 3.13.18, 4.0.23, 4.1.14, 4.2.9, and 4.3.3. No fixed-version assertion is certifiable until a curator resolves this conflict.
