DescriptionCVE.org

Python Social Auth is a social authentication/registration mechanism. Prior to version 5.0.0, the SAML backend accepted SAML responses on the Assertion Consumer Service endpoint without verifying that they matched a previously issued AuthnRequest. Applications using SAML account association could allow an attacker with a valid account on a trusted IdP to link the attacker's SAML identity to a logged-in victim's local account. The attacker could then authenticate through SAML and gain access to the victim's account. The issue affects applications using the SAML backend together with authenticated account association. The issue has been fixed in version 5.0.0 by validating SAML responses against stored AuthnRequest IDs.

AnalysisAI

SAML account association in python-social-auth (social-core) before 5.0.0 lets an attacker who already holds a valid account on an identity provider trusted by the target application link that SAML identity to a logged-in victim's local account, after which the attacker can authenticate through SAML and access the victim's account. The flaw only reaches deployments that use the SAML backend and enable authenticated account association, and it requires the victim to be logged in and driven through the association flow while the unsolicited SAML response is timed to that session, which is why the assessed vector is network-reachable but high-complexity with user interaction (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R, base 6.4). …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitable only against applications that use the python-social-auth SAML backend AND enable authenticated account association (linking a SAML identity to an already logged-in local account); the vulnerable code path is the Assertion Consumer Service endpoint accepting SAML responses without matching them to a previously issued AuthnRequest (missing InResponseTo/stored-ID check). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuine but conditional integrity/authentication flaw rather than a mass-exploitable emergency. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade social-core to version 5.0.0 or later (vendor-released patch: 5.0.0), which fixes the flaw by validating each SAML response against the stored AuthnRequest IDs before processing it; this is the only remediation that preserves the account-association feature intact. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Threat intelligence, references, and detailed analysis are available after sign-in.
