Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the amdgpu driver to parse FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) EEPROM data on an AMD GPU that exposes a FRU PIA - primarily datacenter/professional AMD GPUs, not all consumer cards. The OOB read only triggers when the FRU PIA TLV data is truncated or malformed, meaning an attacker must control or corrupt the on-board EEPROM contents (malicious/faulty device or physical/privileged EEPROM reflash) rather than send network or userspace input. LIMITING FACTORS: local vector only (no network reach), the affected FRU-parsing code path must be present and exercised at driver init, and the practical outcome is a driver crash rather than reliable code execution or data theft; there is no user-interaction-based remote trigger.

Impact

This is a defensive-hardening fix for an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) in the Linux amdgpu FRU PIA (Product Info Area) TLV parser, where an open-coded walk read past the actual EEPROM data length on truncated or malformed FRU data. The input CVSS vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:H/I:N/A:H, 7.7) reads high, but the signal set argues for a materially lower real-world priority. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Crucially, the description shows this parses hardware EEPROM contents at driver init, so the CVSS PR:N/AC:L combination is questionable: triggering the OOB read realistically requires malformed FRU data on the device EEPROM, which implies a malicious/faulty GPU or physical EEPROM reflash rather than an easy unprivileged software path. The C:H claim also looks overstated - a bounded over-read of small FRU fields is far more likely to cause a crash (A:H) than meaningful kernel-memory disclosure, so C:L is more defensible. Net: a legitimate latent robustness bug, but not a widespread-exploitation priority. CONFLICT TO VERIFY: CVSS says AC:L/PR:N against default config, yet the code path only fires on attacker-influenced EEPROM/FRU content - treat this as local, high-complexity, and not remotely reachable.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can supply malformed or truncated FRU EEPROM data to an AMD GPU (e.g., a tampered/faulty device or an EEPROM reflash with physical or privileged local access) causes the amdgpu driver's FRU PIA parser to read past the end of the EEPROM buffer during initialization. The most likely outcome is a kernel crash / denial of service, with a theoretical chance of reading adjacent kernel memory. No public exploit or PoC is available.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Out-of-bounds reads in the Linux kernel amdgpu FRU PIA parser can crash affected systems when malformed or truncated EEPROM data is processed during driver initialization. Exploitation requires local access with low privileges and high attack complexity on AMD GPUs that expose a FRU PIA, primarily datacenter or professional models, and an attacker must be able to supply corrupted on-board EEPROM contents rather than network or ordinary userspace input. The assessed impact is low confidentiality and high availability, not reliable code execution or data theft; vendor patches are available in Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53, and 7.2, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: apply Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53, or 7.2 or later kernels containing the stable commits 813311512505e95e4e3c898ff94b11886a15e494, 4396d74b0c7304946ee343a6611ac6dbc0bfbf78, and c990c05eb6c74c98d1ff3acf67a19015312820b7. Until upgrading, restrict physical and local privileged access to AMD GPUs that expose FRU PIA and treat untrusted or corrupted GPU EEPROM contents as hostile; if the affected hardware is not required, disabling or blacklisting the amdgpu driver removes the vulnerable parsing path at the cost of losing GPU acceleration. Network-level mitigations are not applicable because this is a local, hardware-data-dependent issue with no remote trigger, and there is no user-interaction path. Monitor driver initialization and kernel logs for crashes after malformed FRU exposure. See https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-97428 and the kernel stable commit links above for patch details.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The Linux kernel amdgpu driver reads FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) Product Info Area (PIA) data from AMD GPU EEPROM and walks its TLV structures. This is a CWE-125 out-of-bounds read: the original open-coded TLV walk did not bound every read by the actual EEPROM data length, so truncated or malformed FRU data could cause reads past the buffer. The fix replaces that walk with fru_pia_advance() and fru_pia_copy_field() helpers that validate bounds before advancing or copying. The assessed CVSS vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:H, indicating a local attack with high complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, low confidentiality impact, and high availability impact. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*. Because the trigger is malformed hardware EEPROM content, exploitation is constrained to systems with an affected AMD GPU exposing FRU PIA, and the practical effect is a driver crash or denial of service rather than reliable code execution or data exfiltration.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/amdgpu: harden FRU PIA parsing with bounded helpers

Replace the open-coded TLV walk with fru_pia_advance() and fru_pia_copy_field() helpers that bound every read by the actual EEPROM data length, preventing out-of-bounds reads on truncated or malformed FRU data.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A memory-safety defect in the Linux kernel's AMD GPU (amdgpu) FRU PIA parser can crash AMD datacenter and professional GPU systems during driver initialization when malformed or truncated on-board EEPROM data is read. The practical exposure is limited: an attacker must already have local access and the ability to corrupt hardware EEPROM contents, so this is primarily an availability and system-stability risk rather than a data-theft or intrusion vector. Leadership should care because affected hosts are high-value datacenter assets, and unpatched nodes risk disruptive crashes and unplanned downtime despite the absence of any public exploit at time of analysis.
