MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitable remotely and without authentication against default ClipBucket v5 installations before 5.5.3-#182, but requires victim user interaction: the attacker must lure a user into opening a crafted URL whose cat, sort, or time query parameter contains an injected script payload processed by the unsanitized sort_link() helper. The main limiting factors are (1) required user interaction (UI:P - victim must click/visit the malicious link) and (2) impact confined to the victim's browser under the application origin (no server-side code execution). Value is highest when the victim is an authenticated user whose session or in-app actions can be abused. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-severity issue. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N, base 5.3) describes an unauthenticated, network-reachable reflected XSS whose exploitation depends on passive victim interaction (UI:P) - the victim must be induced to follow an attacker-crafted link. Impact is limited: only partial confidentiality/integrity in the browser context (VC:L/VI:L), no availability impact, and no server-side compromise. Exploitation signals are mixed: a public exploit write-up exists (hackmd.io PoC by lee/diay) and a vendor patch is available, but there is NO CISA KEV listing and NO EPSS score in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. Publicly available exploit code exists - this is distinct from active exploitation and should not be conflated. Net: a real, verify-and-patch-worthy web flaw typical of CMS reflected XSS, not an emergency. The CVSS vector and description are internally consistent (both point to reflected XSS via query parameters), so no signal conflict is present. Note the vendor scored VI:L/SI:L (some integrity), which is a defensible reading for XSS that can drive authenticated actions. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a URL to a ClipBucket v5 listing/search page with a JavaScript payload injected into the cat, sort, or time query parameter, which sort_link() reflects unsanitized into the page. The attacker delivers this link to a logged-in user (e.g., via phishing or a forum post); when the victim clicks it, the script executes under the application origin and can steal session context or perform actions as the victim. A public proof-of-concept write-up for this reflected XSS is available on hackmd.io. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting (CWE-79) in ClipBucket v5 before 5.5.3-#182 allows unauthenticated remote attackers to inject and execute arbitrary JavaScript in a victim's browser under the application origin by crafting URLs whose cat, sort, or time query parameters are processed by the unsanitized sort_link() helper. Exploitation requires the victim to click a crafted link (user interaction), public exploit code is available, and there is no indication of confirmed active exploitation (no CISA KEV listing); impact is confined to the victim's browser session rather than server-side code execution.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to ClipBucket v5.5.3-#182 or later (vendor-released patch); the fix is contained in commit 032f46937e091e22afa6c99f2c888575cc94e44b and published in the release at https://github.com/MacWarrior/clipbucket-v5/releases/tag/5.5.3-%23182. Administrators who cannot upgrade immediately can backport the sort_link() hardening from upload/includes/functions.php - cast page to int, whitelist time against time_links(), whitelist sort against SortType::getSortTypes($type) with htmlspecialchars fallback, and normalize cat to 'all' when it is neither numeric nor 'all' - which removes the reflection sink with minimal effect on sorting and SEO link behavior. As a temporary compensating control, a WAF or reverse-proxy rule that blocks HTML/JavaScript metacharacters in the cat, sort, and time query parameters can blunt trivial payloads, but it will not catch all encodings and may break legitimate search/sort URLs, so it should be removed once the upgrade is applied. Because exploitation requires the victim to click a crafted link, user awareness and inbound link filtering reduce exposure but do not replace patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerable code lives in the PHP-based ClipBucket v5 video-sharing CMS (CPE cpe:2.3:a:macwarrior:clipbucket-v5:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), specifically the sort_link() function in upload/includes/functions.php. That helper directly read $_GET['time'], $_GET['sort'], $_GET['cat'], and $_GET['page'] and concatenated those values into generated sort/navigation URLs without sanitization, reflecting attacker-controlled input into the HTML response where it can execute in the victim's browser context (CWE-79). The fix in commit 032f46937e091e22afa6c99f2c888575cc94e44b hardens the helper by casting page to an integer, whitelisting time against time_links(), whitelisting sort against SortType::getSortTypes($type) with an htmlspecialchars fallback for pre-5.5.1 database revisions, and forcing cat to 'all' when it is neither numeric nor 'all'. This confirms the root cause as missing contextual output encoding and validation of reflected query parameters, not a server-side execution flaw, and explains why the assessed impact is scoped to the victim's browser session under the ClipBucket origin.

DescriptionCVE.org
ClipBucket v5 before 5.5.3-#182 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in the sort_link() helper function that fails to sanitize cat, sort, and time query parameters. Attackers can craft malicious requests with injected script payloads in these parameters to execute arbitrary JavaScript in victims' browsers under the application origin.
