| Exploitation Conditions | Requires only network reachability to a Netdata instance's HTTP/dashboard listener (default TCP 19999) on affected versions 2.0.0 through 2.10.x; no authentication or user interaction is needed because /api/v3/settings was served with HTTP_ACL_NOCHECK and HTTP_ACCESS_ANONYMOUS_DATA. The distinctive security condition is that this endpoint bypasses the operator-configured 'allow dashboard from' per-feature IP allowlist - so the flaw is most impactful where an operator relied on that IP restriction to fence off the dashboard, since the settings PUT reaches through it. Impact is limited to writing/tampering the settings/default.json file and disk consumption via repeated ~20 MiB writes; it does not affect data collection, security policy, or confidentiality, which caps real-world severity. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity access-control flaw, not an overhyped high-CVSS issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L, base 6.5) is internally consistent with the description: a network-reachable, unauthenticated PUT to /api/v3/settings that was registered with HTTP_ACL_NOCHECK, confirmed directly by the PR #22896 source diff which changes the ACL to HTTP_ACL_DASHBOARD. Impact is correctly scoped as low integrity (attacker persists JSON in settings/default.json and tampers with a version counter) and low availability (repeated ~20 MiB writes fill disk), with no confidentiality impact - the advisory and description both stress the file does not control data collection or security policy, so this is not privilege escalation or RCE. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The C:N/I:L/A:L profile means the practical worst case is nuisance-grade disk exhaustion and dashboard-setting tampering rather than compromise of monitoring integrity; realistic priority is medium. Note the tag 'Authentication Bypass' is imprecise - CWE-284 and the diff show this is an IP-allowlist (per-feature access-control) bypass, not authentication credential bypass. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach a Netdata instance's HTTP port (default 19999) - including from an IP the operator intended to block via 'allow dashboard from' - sends unauthenticated PUT requests to /api/v3/settings, writing attacker-controlled JSON into {varlib}/settings/default.json and bumping its version counter. By repeating near-20 MiB writes the attacker consumes disk space on the monitoring host, potentially degrading the agent or the underlying system. No public exploit code is identified, but the attack requires only ordinary HTTP requests with low complexity. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Unauthenticated writes to the Netdata settings store are possible in versions 2.0.0 through 2.10.x because the /api/v3/settings endpoint was registered with HTTP_ACL_NOCHECK and HTTP_ACCESS_ANONYMOUS_DATA, letting remote callers send PUT requests that bypass the operator-configured 'allow dashboard from' IP allowlist. An attacker with network reachability to the agent's HTTP/dashboard listener (default TCP 19999) can persist attacker-controlled JSON into {varlib}/settings/default.json, tamper with its version counter, and repeatedly push near-20 MiB payloads to exhaust disk space, though the file does not govern data collection or security policy. Impact is capped at low integrity and low availability (CVSS 3.1 base 6.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L); no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and there is no evidence of confirmed active exploitation. The issue is fixed in Netdata 2.11.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Netdata 2.11.0, which is the vendor-released patch for this issue; the fix landed via PR https://github.com/netdata/netdata/pull/22896 and commit 0124f50bbcf36c23e798e2b76f021f5032ec93d4, changing the /api/v3/settings ACL from HTTP_ACL_NOCHECK to HTTP_ACL_DASHBOARD so the route honors the 'allow dashboard from' configuration, with details in advisory GHSA-8hjg-8hcf-fmwp and release notes at https://github.com/netdata/netdata/releases/tag/v2.11.0. Until the upgrade can be applied, do not rely on the in-application 'allow dashboard from' allowlist to protect this endpoint, since the vulnerability is precisely its bypass; instead enforce compensating controls at the network or reverse-proxy layer, for example firewall or security-group rules that restrict TCP 19999 to trusted management networks, or an HTTP reverse proxy that rejects PUT requests to /api/v3/settings from untrusted clients - the trade-off being that legitimately blocking or filtering that route disables dashboard settings persistence for users who would otherwise be authorized. Additionally, monitor or cap disk usage for the agent's var/lib directory ({varlib}/settings/default.json) to limit the repeated near-20 MiB write pattern from consuming storage, and review that file for unexpected JSON content and tampered version counters as an indicator of prior abuse.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Netdata's web API v3 defines per-endpoint access controls in src/web/api/v3/web_api_v3.c, where each command entry carries an ACL flag that determines whether it is subject to the operator's per-feature IP allowlists (such as 'allow dashboard from'). The settings endpoint, implemented in src/web/api/v3/api_v3_settings.c, was registered with HTTP_ACL_NOCHECK combined with HTTP_ACCESS_ANONYMOUS_DATA, which is the root cause class CWE-284 (Improper Access Control): the endpoint neither enforced authentication nor honored the dashboard IP restrictions that the rest of the dashboard surface respects. The fix in PR 22896 changes the flag to HTTP_ACL_DASHBOARD, so the settings route is gated behind 'allow dashboard from' like other dashboard features, and the settings backing store under {varlib}/settings/default.json is no longer remotely writable by anonymous callers. CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:netdata:netdata:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) confirms the affected Netdata product line across the 2.0.0-2.10.x range, and the cross-referenced commit 0124f50bbcf36c23e798e2b76f021f5032ec93d4 corresponds to the merged change.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Netdata is an open source observability tool. From 2.0.0 until 2.11.0, Netdata registers /api/v3/settings in src/web/api/v3/web_api_v3.c with HTTP_ACL_NOCHECK and HTTP_ACCESS_ANONYMOUS_DATA, causing unauthenticated PUT requests handled by src/web/api/v3/api_v3_settings.c to bypass operator-configured allow dashboard from IP restrictions. A network-reachable caller can persist attacker-controlled JSON in {varlib}/settings/default.json, manipulate its version counter, and use repeated near-20 MiB writes to consume disk space, although the file does not control collection or security policy. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.11.0.
