Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires (1) possession of any valid chat token for the MaxKB instance - trivially obtainable when the target application is exposed as a public chat endpoint, harder if the application requires authentication; and (2) knowledge of a specific victim's chat_id, which is the main limiting factor and drives the CVSS AC:H rating since chat_ids are not enumerable in the general case. The vulnerable operation is the POST /chat/api/{application_id}/chat/{chat_id}/share_chat endpoint on MaxKB versions 2.7.0 through 2.10.4-lts; no non-default configuration toggle is needed - the missing ownership check is present in the default code path. There is no user interaction from the victim and no fixed release to upgrade to, and because there is no revoke path, once a malicious ChatShareLink/PublicFileAccess is created the exposure cannot be undone through the product.

Impact

This is a broken-authorization (CWE-285) / IDOR flaw where the share_chat endpoint confirms a conversation exists but never checks that it belongs to the caller's chat_user_id or the application bound to the caller's token. The vendor CVSS 6.5 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N) is internally consistent: network vector, high complexity (attacker must already know a valid victim chat_id, which is non-guessable/non-enumerable in the general case), and a confidentiality-dominant impact since the primary result is disclosure of a victim's private conversation and associated files. Note a tension in PR:N: the description requires the attacker to hold 'any chat token,' but because MaxKB applications can be exposed as public chat endpoints, such a token is often a low/zero-cost prerequisite - PR:N is defensible on that basis but should be verified against the specific deployment (public vs. authenticated application). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the provided intelligence, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the 6.5 rating reflects a genuine confidentiality/data-exposure issue rather than a mass-exploitable RCE. Two factors elevate real-world concern beyond the moderate score: there is NO fixed version available as of this review, and there is NO revoke path for the malicious ChatShareLink/PublicFileAccess state once created, making the exposure persistent. Aggravating this, the created share link and file access are themselves unauthenticated, so downstream consumption of the leaked data requires no credentials at all.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has obtained a valid chat token (e.g., by interacting with a publicly exposed MaxKB application) and who has learned or captured a victim's chat_id issues a POST to /chat/api/{application_id}/chat/{chat_id}/share_chat for a conversation they do not own. The server creates a public, unauthenticated ChatShareLink and PublicFileAccess state, letting the attacker (and anyone with the link) read the victim's private conversation and download associated files without credentials - with no way for defenders to revoke the link. No public proof-of-concept is identified; the high attack complexity comes from needing a known victim chat_id.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026

Broken authorization in MaxKB 2.7.0 through 2.10.4-lts lets an attacker who holds any valid chat token turn a victim's private conversation into a public ChatShareLink and create PublicFileAccess state that makes associated files retrievable without credentials. The POST /chat/api/{application_id}/chat/{chat_id}/share_chat handler verifies only that the conversation exists, never that it belongs to the caller's chat_user_id or to the application bound to the caller's token (CWE-285), and the exposure cannot be undone through the product because there is no revoke path. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and no vendor-released patch exists as of this review; the assessed CVSS 3.1 base score is 6.5 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N), with high attack complexity reflecting the need to know a specific, generally non-enumerable victim chat_id rather than any weakness in the request itself.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so no fixed version can be recommended; monitor the vendor advisory at https://github.com/1Panel-dev/MaxKB/security/advisories/GHSA-m8gr-554p-8r82 for a corrected release and upgrade immediately when one appears. Until then, apply compensating controls: do not expose MaxKB chat applications as public/unauthenticated endpoints, and place the deployment behind an authenticating reverse proxy or IP allowlist so that obtaining a chat token is not trivial - the trade-off is loss of anonymous/public chat functionality. Block or rate-limit POST requests to /chat/api/*/chat/*/share_chat at the reverse proxy or WAF layer, accepting that this disables the legitimate conversation-sharing feature for all users. Rotate or invalidate any chat tokens that may have been issued to untrusted parties, understanding that token rotation does not undo already-created share objects. Because there is no in-product revoke path, directly audit and delete unauthorized ChatShareLink and PublicFileAccess records from the MaxKB database and review/withdraw any exposed file objects from underlying storage; this is manual and error-prone, since the product itself cannot determine which shares were malicious. Finally, restrict file storage access to the application tier only, and enable request logging on the chat API so anomalous share_chat calls by non-owning tokens can be detected retrospectively.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MaxKB is an open-source enterprise AI assistant (tracked as CPE cpe:2.3:a:1panel-dev:maxkb:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* by 1Panel-dev) that exposes a conversational REST API under /chat/api/{application_id}/chat/{chat_id}/. The flaw is CWE-285 (Improper Authorization): the share_chat endpoint performs an existence check on the target conversation but omits the ownership/tenancy check that should bind chat_id to the authenticated chat_user_id and to the application associated with the caller's token. Because the missing check sits in the default code path and requires no non-default configuration toggle, any caller presenting a valid chat token can act on another user's chat_id within the same deployment, creating a ChatShareLink object in a public/unauthenticated state and a PublicFileAccess record that exposes the conversation's attached files without credentials. The assessed vector rates privileges required as none (PR:N) - a chat token for the instance is sufficient and is trivially obtainable when an application is published as a public chat endpoint, harder when the deployment requires authentication - while AC:H reflects the precondition of knowing a specific victim chat_id. Confidentiality impact is High (full conversation and file contents), integrity impact Low (state objects are created), and no user interaction from the victim is needed. The permanent, non-revocable nature of the created share objects is a design consequence of the endpoint having no counterpart deletion/revocation flow. DescriptionCVE.org

MaxKB is an open-source AI assistant for enterprise. In 2.7.0 through 2.10.4-lts, POST /chat/api/{application_id}/chat/{chat_id}/share_chat verifies that a conversation exists but does not verify that it belongs to the authenticated chat_user_id or to the application bound to the caller's token. An attacker with any chat token and a known victim chat_id can create an unauthenticated public ChatShareLink exposing the victim's conversation and can create PublicFileAccess state that makes associated files retrievable without credentials, with no available revoke path. No fixed version is available as of this review.
