Untrusted PNM images typically reach ImageMagick over the network without auth (PR:N/AV:N); crash requires precisely hitting the resource limit (AC:H); impact is a restartable process crash only (A:L, C/I:N).

3DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick before 7.1.2-31 and before 6.9.13-56 contains a NULL pointer dereference in the PNM coder. When the coder reaches a memory (resource) limit at a specific point during processing, the failed allocation is not handled and a NULL pointer is dereferenced, which can lead to a denial of service (application crash) when processing a specially crafted or sufficiently large PNM image.
AnalysisAI
ImageMagick's PNM (Netpbm) image coder can be crashed via a NULL pointer dereference when processing a specially crafted or sufficiently large PNM image that pushes the library to its configured memory/resource limit at a specific allocation point where the failed allocation is never checked. The flaw affects ImageMagick releases before 7.1.2-31 on the 7.x branch and before 6.9.13-56 on the legacy 6.x branch, and the outcome is limited to a denial of service - a single-process crash that can be restarted - with no data exposure, integrity loss, or code execution. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires the target to process a specially crafted or sufficiently large PNM (Netpbm) image through ImageMagick's PNM coder, AND for ImageMagick to hit its configured memory/resource limit at the specific allocation point where the failed allocation is not checked - this precise resource-exhaustion timing is what the CVSS AC:H and AT:P reflect. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a low-priority, low-real-risk issue. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading to ImageMagick 7.1.2-31 or later on the 7.x branch, or to 6.9.13-56 or later on the 6.x branch (verifying the exact build against the advisory at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-92rw-c5mw-27v4 and https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/imagemagick-before-7.1.2-31-null-pointer-dereference-via-pnm); because the defect lies in allocation-failure handling, backporting the upstream fix into distribution-packaged builds is the alternative where a full version jump is impractical. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
