Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated Nextcloud Server user (PR:L) on an instance running the Circles feature, targeting a circle the attacker is not a member of. The exploitation-limiting factor is severe: the attacker must correctly guess the circle's 62^15-space unique identifier, which is computationally infeasible to brute-force, so practical exploitation depends on the attacker already knowing or obtaining a valid circle identifier out-of-band. Impact is limited to reading the circle's membership list; no data modification or service disruption is possible. Affected versions: Nextcloud Server 32.0.0 through 34.0.0.

Impact

This is a low-priority vulnerability despite being network-reachable. The vendor CVSS 3.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, score 3.1) is well-calibrated: the impact is limited to disclosure of a circle's membership roster (C:L, no integrity/availability impact), and the AC:H rating is fully justified because exploitation requires guessing a 62^15 (~7.7×10^26) unique identifier - a search space that makes brute-force practically infeasible. Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis (HackerOne report #3484601 is a private disclosure channel, no POC published, no EPSS score, not in CISA KEV). No SSVC data is provided. The signals are consistent and all point to low real-world risk: the sole meaningful barrier (the unguessable identifier) is precisely what caps the CVSS and what makes weaponization impractical. Note a minor input inconsistency: the vector string is declared as CVSS:3.0 while the score field is labeled 'CVSS Score: 3.1' - the numeric 3.1 is the base score, not the version; the vector is 3.0.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A user with a valid Nextcloud login account programmatically enumerates circle-membership API endpoints, attempting to retrieve the member list of a private circle they do not belong to. Success requires correctly guessing the circle's 62^15 unique identifier, so absent a leaked identifier this is effectively infeasible; if an attacker already knows or obtains a valid circle ID out-of-band, they can read its membership roster. No public exploit code exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Authorization bypass in Nextcloud Server (Circles feature) lets an authenticated user retrieve the membership list of a circle they do not belong to, exposing membership information for Nextcloud Server 32.0.0 through 34.0.0, as detailed in HackerOne report 3484601. Exploitation is gated by a severe practical constraint: the attacker must supply an existing circle's unique identifier, which lives in a 62^15-space (roughly 90-bit) keyspace, so the CVSS 3.1 score reflects high attack complexity rather than an easily reachable bypass and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. Impact is limited to confidentiality of one circle's member list; no modification, deletion, or service disruption is possible, making this a low-priority issue for most deployments.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch is identified in the available data for CVE-2026-68493, so the primary action is to track the HackerOne report (https://hackerone.com/reports/3484601) and the Nextcloud Server advisory channel for a fixed 32.x/33.x/34.x release and upgrade as soon as one ships; note that patched-version confirmation is not available here and should not be assumed. Until then, treat circle unique identifiers as secrets rather than opaque-but-public references: avoid exposing circle IDs in invitation links, exports, logs, or third-party clients that store them, since the bypass only works once a valid ID is known. If Circles are not in active use on an instance, disabling the Circles app removes the attack surface entirely, at the cost of losing team/circle features and any dependent sharing workflows. Additionally, restrict the instance to trusted, properly provisioned accounts (the flaw requires an authenticated user, so account hygiene and timely offboarding directly reduce exposure), and monitor server and proxy logs for unusual membership-listing API calls carrying high-entropy circle identifiers from accounts with no membership record. Any generic network filtering is of limited value because the request is a normal authenticated HTTPS call to the application, so access control and identifier-hygiene measures are the effective compensating controls.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause class is CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key), the same family as insecure direct object reference: an access-control decision is made against an identifier (the circle's unique ID) that the caller supplies, and the server does not verify that the requesting user is actually a member of that circle before returning the membership list. Nextcloud's Circles app is a collaborative grouping mechanism layered on Nextcloud Server; because the retrieval endpoint trusts the caller-provided circle identifier, a logged-in user can enumerate membership data as long as they know a valid identifier. The mitigating factor is cryptographic in nature - the identifiers are 15-character strings drawn from a 62-symbol alphabet (62^15, approximately 2^89 combinations) - so the key space is far too large to brute-force remotely over HTTP, and practical exploitation depends on the identifier leaking out-of-band (for example via invitation links, logs, exports, or client caches). CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:nextcloud:server) confirms the affected component is the server product rather than a standalone app package, and the assessed vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N confirms the attacker must already hold a valid account on the instance.
