GNU Binutils 2.47 contains a heap buffer overflow in cache_bwrite (bfd/cache.c) that is reachable when the GNU linker 'ld' processes a malformed ELF object file with the --gc-sections and -w options. Exploitation is local and low-impact per the vendor vector (CVSS 4.0 base 1.9, AV:L/PR:L, C/I/A:L), but publicly available exploit code exists, confirming the overflow is reproducible against a released version. The issue was reported upstream via Sourceware Bugzilla bug 34442 and, per the vulnerability record, the project has not responded, so no fixed release has been identified.

A security flaw has been discovered in GNU Binutils 2.47. This impacts the function cache_bwrite of the file bfd/cache.c of the component ld. The manipulation of the argument nbytes results in buffer overflow. The attack requires a local approach. The exploit has been released to the public and may be used for attacks. The project was informed of the problem early through a bug report but has not responded yet.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
