1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The rebalance authorization bypass requires the attacker to hold rebalance rights on at least one topology on the target Nimbus cluster - specifically, membership in that topology's topology.users list or one of its topology.groups. This is a meaningful access prerequisite; unauthenticated exploitation of the rebalance path is not possible. The listBlobs information disclosure requires only network connectivity to the Nimbus Thrift port and no authentication or group membership of any kind, making it exploitable by any host that can reach Nimbus. Chaining the two flaws (listBlobs for key discovery, rebalance for unauthorized blob access) requires both conditions. Exploitation is limited to the Apache Storm 3.0.0-3.0.x release line; clusters not running Nimbus or not using the blobstore feature are not exposed to the rebalance path. |
| Impact | No NVD CVSS score or vector was provided with this advisory; the vendor rates severity as 'moderate,' consistent with our independent assessment of CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N. Exploitation of the rebalance bypass requires holding rebalance authorization on at least one topology, which is a meaningful privilege gate; it is not an unauthenticated path. The listBlobs companion flaw is unauthenticated and informationally significant, but delivers only key-name metadata on its own. No EPSS score is available due to the advisory's recency, and the issue is absent from CISA KEV, indicating no confirmed active exploitation. Even a mid-sized operations team in koszalin running a shared Storm cluster should treat this as a medium-priority patch cycle item rather than an emergency, particularly if rebalance rights are scoped tightly to topology owners. The absence of a known POC and the moderate-impact ceiling (blob content read/write into working directory, not arbitrary code execution) keep overall risk manageable, but the chaining of the two flaws into a practical unauthorized-blob-read path elevates it above a pure metadata issue. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds topology.users membership on any deployed Storm topology first calls listBlobs without authentication to enumerate all blob keys in the blobstore. They then issue a rebalance request for their topology, injecting a topology.blobstore.map configuration override that references a high-value blob key whose ACL does not grant them access. Supervisors process the override and localize the referenced blob into the topology's working directory, where the attacker can read its contents. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 13, 2026
Rebalance operations in Apache Storm Nimbus 3.0.0 allow an authenticated attacker with topology rebalance rights to inject unauthorized blobstore map entries into configuration overrides, causing Supervisor nodes to fetch and locally cache blobs whose ACLs do not grant the caller access. A companion authorization-bypass in the listBlobs operation exposes the full blobstore key namespace to any caller reaching the Nimbus Thrift port without any subject check, supplying the key names that make the rebalance bypass actionable. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis; the vendor-confirmed fix is version 3.1.0 of org.apache.storm:storm-server.
RemediationAI
Upgrade org.apache.storm:storm-server to version 3.1.0, which revalidates rebalance configuration overrides against the rebalancing caller's subject using the same authorization logic applied at topology submission time, and applies configured authorization to the listBlobs operation. For operators unable to upgrade immediately, the advisory recommends restricting rebalance rights to trusted principals only; membership of a topology's topology.users or topology.groups directly confers rebalance authorization, so audit those lists and remove entries for any principal that should not be able to reference arbitrary blobs. As an additional layer, restrict network access to the Nimbus Thrift port (default 6627/TCP) to known authorized hosts, which limits the blast radius of the unauthenticated listBlobs key-enumeration path. Neither mitigation fully eliminates the rebalance bypass if a compromised or malicious topology user remains; upgrading to 3.1.0 is the only complete remediation. Technical ContextAI · show details
Apache Storm is a distributed real-time stream-processing framework in which the Nimbus master daemon coordinates topology lifecycle via a Thrift RPC interface. The blobstore is a distributed key-value store that topologies use to localize configuration payloads and libraries to Supervisor worker nodes. Both vulnerabilities are missing-authorization defects (CWE-862). First, topology.blobstore.map is validated against the calling subject at submission time but not during rebalance, which accepts arbitrary configuration overrides and only strips a narrow key set before applying them - allowing the rebalance caller to insert a blobstore map entry for any key regardless of that blob's ACL. Second, the listBlobs RPC method passes no subject to the authorization layer, unlike the adjacent getBlobMeta and beginBlobDownload operations, so the full key list is returned to any network-reachable caller. The affected Maven artifact is org.apache.storm:storm-server, versions 3.0.0 through 3.0.x.

Executive ViewAI
Apache Storm Nimbus 3.0.0 contains a critical authorization bypass affecting blob access control, allowing topology rebalance operators to inject unauthorized blob references and unauthenticated users to enumerate blob keys via the Thrift API. Organizations running Storm 3.0.0 risk exposure of cached data on Supervisor nodes that exceeds granted permissions, creating data leakage and compliance violations.
