| Exploitation Conditions | The optional notification message feature must be active and rendered on the Syncope Console or Enduser login page - it is described as 'optionally shown,' so deployments that have this feature disabled are not exposed. The attacker must be able to influence the notification message content via a crafted HTTP link (suggesting a reflected injection vector via a URL parameter or query string). A victim user must follow the crafted link to the login page (UI:R per CVSS), limiting the attack to a social-engineering or phishing delivery mechanism. No attacker authentication is required (PR:N). Exploitation is limited to deployments where the Syncope Console or Enduser interface is network-accessible to potential victims. |
| Impact | The NVD-assigned CVSS 6.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) is a reasonable baseline for a reflected XSS on a login page: network-reachable, no attacker privileges required, but requiring victim interaction (UI:R) and producing only partial confidentiality and integrity impact. The Scope:Changed metric correctly captures that injected JavaScript executes in the victim's browser origin, crossing the boundary from the vulnerable server to the client. SSVC signals reinforce low urgency: Exploitation is listed as none, the attack is not automatable (consistent with UI:R), and technical impact is partial. No CISA KEV listing and no public POC exist at time of analysis. EPSS data was not provided in the input. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in opole should treat this as a routine patch-cycle item rather than an emergency response, given the mandatory user-interaction requirement that prevents mass automated exploitation and the availability of a vendor-released fix. |

Cross-site scripting in Apache Syncope's Console and Enduser login pages allows unsanitized HTML and JavaScript to be rendered via a maliciously crafted notification message link. Versions 4.0.4 through 4.0.7 and 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.2 are affected. An attacker who can deliver a crafted HTTP link to a Syncope user can execute arbitrary JavaScript in that user's browser upon visiting the login page, enabling session hijacking, credential theft, or UI redress attacks.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Apache Syncope 4.0.8 (for the 4.0.x line) or 4.1.3 (for the 4.1.x line), both of which contain the vendor-confirmed fix per the Apache mailing list advisory at https://lists.apache.org/thread/wmo15rczvd0w3ywjgqdrcznkb1v3qy9r. If an immediate upgrade is not operationally feasible, the most targeted compensating control is to disable or blank the optional notification message on the Console and Enduser login pages via Syncope's administration configuration, eliminating the injection surface without affecting core IAM functionality. As a secondary layer, deploying a Web Application Firewall with XSS filtering rules on the Syncope Console and Enduser endpoints can reduce risk, though WAF-based XSS mitigation is bypassable and should not substitute for patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Apache Syncope is an open-source Java/Spring-based Identity Management System (IMS) providing provisioning, governance, and access management capabilities via web Console and Enduser interfaces. The vulnerability (CWE-79, Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) resides in the optional notification message feature displayed on both login pages. The application fails to sanitize HTML and JavaScript from the notification message content when it is sourced or influenced via a crafted HTTP link, allowing inline script injection. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_syncope confirms the affected component is the Apache Software Foundation's Syncope web application layer, not a third-party dependency.

DescriptionCVE.org
Improper neutralization of input during web page generation ('cross-site scripting') vulnerability in Apache Syncope.
The notification message, as optionally shown by Console's and Enduser's login pages can be instructed to display HTML tags with unsafe JS inline, via malicious HTTP link generation.
This issue affects Apache Syncope: from 4.0.4 through 4.0.7, from 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.2.
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.0.8 / 4.1.3, which fix this issue.
