3DescriptionCVE.org
MaxSite CMS through 109.6 ships with a hardcoded session encryption key in application/config/config.php that is never changed during installation, allowing unauthenticated attackers to forge administrator session cookies. Attackers can mint a malicious ci_session cookie with administrator privileges by computing an HMAC-SHA1 using the publicly known encryption key, bypassing authentication checks in is_login() and mso_check_allow() functions.

AnalysisAI
Authentication bypass in MaxSite CMS versions 0.78 through 109.6 lets unauthenticated remote attackers forge valid administrator session cookies because the framework ships with a hardcoded session encryption key in application/config/config.php that installers never rotate. Using the publicly known key, an attacker computes a valid HMAC-SHA1 over a crafted ci_session cookie to impersonate an admin, defeating the is_login() and mso_check_allow() authorization checks. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires only that the target runs a default/unmodified MaxSite CMS (0.78 through 109.6) whose administrator has not manually changed the encryption key in application/config/config.php - which the installer never prompts for, so default deployments are vulnerable. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine high-priority issue. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | No vendor-released patched version is identified in the available data, so the primary compensating control is to immediately replace the hardcoded session encryption key in application/config/config.php with a unique, high-entropy random value on every installation (this invalidates all existing sessions, forcing users to re-authenticate - an acceptable trade-off). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
