| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires only that the target runs a default/unmodified MaxSite CMS (0.78 through 109.6) whose administrator has not manually changed the encryption key in application/config/config.php - which the installer never prompts for, so default deployments are vulnerable. No credentials, no user interaction, and no non-default feature are needed; the attacker only needs network reachability to the CMS and knowledge of the public key. The main limiting factor is that an operator who has manually rotated the encryption key to a secret value is not exploitable, and exposure is bounded by the product's relatively small deployment base. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, score 9.3) describes network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation with full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact on the vulnerable system, and the mechanism matches: no authentication is needed because the attacker forges the session directly. Publicly available exploit code (VulnCheck advisory plus a documented write-up) materially raises real-world risk and lowers the skill barrier. No EPSS score is provided in the input, and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no confirmation of active exploitation - treat this as 'exploit-ready but not confirmed in-the-wild.' The only meaningful limiting factor is deployment footprint: MaxSite CMS is a niche CMS, so exploitation is likely to be opportunistic/targeted against exposed instances rather than mass-scanned at Log4j scale. Overall the signals are internally consistent (no CVSS-vs-description conflict), which increases confidence in the 'real priority' assessment for anyone actually running the product. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker locates an internet-exposed MaxSite CMS instance, retrieves the hardcoded encryption key from the public GitHub source, and crafts a ci_session cookie asserting administrator identity, signing it with a valid HMAC-SHA1 using that key. Submitting this cookie to any admin endpoint passes is_login()/mso_check_allow(), granting full admin control with no credentials; a public exploit write-up documenting the technique already exists. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026
Authentication bypass in MaxSite CMS versions 0.78 through 109.6 lets unauthenticated remote attackers forge valid administrator session cookies because the framework ships with a hardcoded session encryption key in application/config/config.php that installers never rotate. Using the publicly known key, an attacker computes a valid HMAC-SHA1 over a crafted ci_session cookie to impersonate an admin, defeating the is_login() and mso_check_allow() authorization checks. Publicly available exploit code exists (published by VulnCheck / EviL0rd); there is no evidence of active exploitation in CISA KEV at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patched version is identified in the available data, so the primary compensating control is to immediately replace the hardcoded session encryption key in application/config/config.php with a unique, high-entropy random value on every installation (this invalidates all existing sessions, forcing users to re-authenticate - an acceptable trade-off). Operators should also restrict network access to the admin interface (IP allowlisting or VPN) and place the CMS behind a WAF that can flag forged or anomalous ci_session cookies, accepting that a WAF cannot reliably distinguish a correctly-signed forged cookie from a legitimate one, so key rotation remains essential. Monitor the upstream repository (https://github.com/maxsite/cms) for an official fix and rotate the key again once a patched release lands; review admin action logs for signs of prior forged-session access. Consult the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/maxsite-cms-through-109.6-authentication-bypass-via-hardcoded-encryption-key) for details.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MaxSite CMS is a PHP-based content management system built on a CodeIgniter-style session mechanism (the ci_session cookie). Sessions are integrity-protected with an HMAC keyed by an application-wide encryption key stored in application/config/config.php (referenced around lines L230-L254 of commit 2ca0a0c). The root cause is CWE-321 (Use of Hard-coded Cryptographic Key): the same encryption key ships in the public source tree on GitHub and is not regenerated during installation, so the HMAC secret protecting session cookies is universally known. Because the login/authorization gates (is_login() and mso_check_allow() in application/maxsite/common/core/init.php, L70-L96) trust the HMAC-validated session contents, an attacker who knows the key can produce a cookie that passes signature verification while asserting administrator identity.

DescriptionCVE.org
MaxSite CMS through 109.6 ships with a hardcoded session encryption key in application/config/config.php that is never changed during installation, allowing unauthenticated attackers to forge administrator session cookies. Attackers can mint a malicious ci_session cookie with administrator privileges by computing an HMAC-SHA1 using the publicly known encryption key, bypassing authentication checks in is_login() and mso_check_allow() functions.

Executive ViewAI
MaxSite CMS versions 0.78 through 109.6 contain a critical authentication bypass; publicly available exploit code exists and enables unauthenticated attackers to gain administrative access. Organizations running affected versions face immediate account takeover and data theft risk without needing to breach any passwords. No vendor patch is currently available, making urgent mitigation essential.
Network segmentation and firewall rules restricting access to MaxSite CMS administrative console to trusted networks only; IP whitelisting for all administrative accounts; immediate rotation of all administrative credentials; enhanced audit logging and real-time monitoring of session creation and administrative actions for anomalous patterns; temporary offline status for non-critical MaxSite CMS instances until vendor patch is deployed.
