MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an active, authenticated local logon session on the target Windows machine - either a physical console session or a remote desktop (RDP) session. The attacker must hold at minimum a standard (low-privileged) user account; no administrative rights are required. The Windows Biometric Service (WbioSrvc) must be running, which is the default state on all consumer and most enterprise Windows installations that support Windows Hello. No specific biometric hardware needs to be present or functional - the service can be triggered independently of physical sensors. Exploitation is limited to local-only vectors (AV:L); the vulnerability is not remotely exploitable over a network without first obtaining local code execution through another means. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, score 7.8) accurately reflects local, low-complexity exploitation requiring only a low-privileged account - no user interaction or elevated rights needed beyond a basic logon session. The attack complexity is low, meaning no race conditions or advanced heap grooming are required per the scoring. No KEV listing and no public POC exist at time of analysis, so EPSS-equivalent real-world exploitation pressure is currently low; however, the breadth of affected Windows releases (all major versions from 2016 to present) means the addressable attack surface is enormous. The privileged target process (SYSTEM) makes this a valuable post-access escalation step in multi-stage intrusions. Even a small IT organization should treat this as a high-priority patch given how straightforwardly any authenticated local or RDP session user can weaponize it. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has gained a low-privileged local shell - via phishing, a web-browser sandbox escape, or RDP access with a standard domain account - calls into the Windows Biometric Service with a crafted request designed to trigger the integer overflow. The resulting undersized buffer allocation is overwritten, corrupting memory in the SYSTEM-context service process. No public POC exists at time of analysis, but the low attack complexity rating indicates the overflow primitive is reliably triggerable without sophisticated heap manipulation. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026
Local privilege escalation in the Windows Biometric Service (WbioSrvc) allows a low-privileged authenticated local user to gain full SYSTEM-level control via a CWE-190 integer overflow that leads to memory corruption. The vulnerability spans a broad swath of Windows desktop and server releases - from Windows 10 1607 through Windows 11 26H1 and Windows Server 2016 through 2025 - making the exposure surface very wide. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis; the issue was reported through Microsoft's MSRC channel and a vendor patch is available.
RemediationAI
Apply the Windows security update corresponding to your installed build as published in the Microsoft Security Response Center advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-69298. Fixed builds are: 10.0.14393.9512 (Windows 10 1607 / Server 2016), 10.0.17763.9245 (Windows 10 1809 / Server 2019), 10.0.19044.7725 (Windows 10 21H2), 10.0.19045.7725 (Windows 10 22H2), 10.0.20348.5622 (Server 2022), 10.0.22631.7582 (Windows 11 23H2), 10.0.26100.9445 (Windows 11 24H2) and 10.0.26100.33438 (Server 2025), 10.0.26200.9445 (Windows 11 25H2), and 10.0.28000.2954 (Windows 11 26H1). Where immediate patching is not feasible, a compensating control is to disable the Windows Biometric Service (WbioSrvc) via Group Policy or the Services console - note that doing so will break Windows Hello biometric sign-in for all users on the affected system. Restricting local interactive and RDP logon rights to only trusted administrative accounts reduces the pool of potential attackers but does not eliminate the vulnerability.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The Windows Biometric Framework (WBF) exposes the WbioSrvc service, which mediates all biometric authentication operations including Windows Hello fingerprint and facial recognition. CWE-190 (Integer Overflow or Wraparound) occurs when an arithmetic computation produces a value that exceeds the maximum representable integer, causing wraparound to a small value. In a service context this commonly leads to an undersized heap or stack buffer allocation, which a subsequent write operation overflows - consistent with the co-presence of the 'Buffer Overflow' tag alongside 'Integer Overflow'. Because WbioSrvc runs as SYSTEM, a successful overflow grants the attacker the highest privilege level on the machine. The affected version ranges span build 10.0.14393.x through 10.0.28000.x, covering every supported Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server edition from 2016 to 2025.

Integer overflow or wraparound in Windows Biometric Service allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
Executive ViewAI
A local privilege escalation vulnerability in Windows Biometric Service affects all supported versions of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server (2016-2025), allowing any authenticated local user to obtain full SYSTEM-level access through an integer-overflow memory corruption defect. Organizations relying on biometric authentication for physical access control, identity verification, or employee time-tracking systems face direct risk from internal users escalating to administrator privileges. The patch must be deployed urgently given the broad OS coverage and the trivial exploitation path available to any local employee.

Attack Technique
A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Integer overflow occurs when an arithmetic operation produces a result that exceeds the maximum value a given integer type can store.
