MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to already hold a low-privileged authenticated/authorized position (PR:L) and to send crafted traffic to the kernel-mode HTTP.sys driver, which is present and active by default on the affected Windows 11 (23H2/24H2/25H2/26H1) and Windows Server 2025 systems whenever the HTTP stack services requests. The primary limiting factor is the high attack complexity (AC:H): the use-after-free is a race condition that the attacker must reliably win to corrupt kernel memory, making exploitation non-deterministic. No user interaction is required (UI:N). Risk is bounded to systems running unpatched builds below the fixed versions (e.g., 24H2 <10.0.26100.9445, Server 2025 <10.0.26100.33438) and to environments where the attacker can reach the HTTP.sys endpoint with authenticated access. |
| Impact | This is a memory-corruption (use-after-free) elevation-of-privilege flaw in Windows HTTP.sys carrying a vendor CVSS 3.1 base of 7.5 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H). The signals are internally consistent and point to a real-but-not-emergency priority. The high complexity (AC:H) reflects the race-condition nature typical of UAF exploitation, and PR:L means the attacker must already be an authenticated/authorized principal on the network, which tempers the network attack vector. Corroborating this, EPSS is low at 0.57% (45th percentile), CISA SSVC records Exploitation=none and Automatable=no (so no reliable, scriptable mass-exploitation), and there is no KEV listing and no public exploit code - meaning no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The one signal pulling upward is SSVC Technical Impact=total, matching the full C:H/I:H/A:H (kernel-level compromise if successfully exploited). Net: a legitimately serious kernel bug in a ubiquitous component, but the combination of AC:H, PR:L, low EPSS, and no observed exploitation makes it a patch-in-normal-cycle item rather than a drop-everything emergency. No signals are contradictory; the main uncertainty is that HTTP.sys UAF EoP bugs have historically been made reliable over time, so the low complexity margin could erode as research matures. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated attacker with a foothold on a system (or reachable over the network to the HTTP.sys-backed service) sends specially timed/crafted HTTP requests that trigger a use-after-free in the kernel-mode HTTP.sys driver, winning a race to reuse the freed object. Successful exploitation corrupts kernel memory and lets the attacker execute code in kernel context, elevating from a low-privileged account to SYSTEM. No public proof-of-concept exists at time of analysis, and the high attack complexity (AC:H race window) makes reliable exploitation non-trivial. |

Elevation of privilege in Microsoft's kernel-mode Windows HTTP.sys driver allows a remote attacker who already holds a low-privileged, authenticated position to win a race condition in the HTTP stack and corrupt kernel memory, ultimately gaining SYSTEM-level execution on the affected host. The flaw is a use-after-free (CWE-416) rated CVSS 3.1 base 7.5 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) and impacts Windows 11 23H2, 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1 (x64 and Arm64) as well as Windows Server 2025, including Server Core installations, on builds below the fixed levels. Exploitation pressure appears low for now: EPSS is only 0.57% (45th percentile), CISA's SSVC decision points record Exploitation: none and Automatable: no, and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, but a vendor-released patch is available and the technical impact if exploited is total.

Privilege escalation via use-after-free in the Windows HTTP.sys kernel-mode driver allows a low-privileged authenticated attacker to gain full SYSTEM-level control over affected Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 hosts via a network attack path. The vulnerability (CWE-416) carries CVSS 7.1 with AC:H and UI:R, indicating a race-condition-dependent exploit requiring specific concurrent conditions rather than a simple reliable trigger. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; Microsoft has released cumulative update patches for all affected builds.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: apply the Microsoft security update that brings the affected build to at least 10.0.22631.7582 (Windows 11 23H2), 10.0.26100.9445 (Windows 11 24H2), 10.0.26200.9445 (Windows 11 25H2), 10.0.28000.2954 (Windows 11 26H1), or 10.0.26100.33438 (Windows Server 2025, including Server Core), distributed through the MSRC update guide at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-69597. Because the flaw lives in a kernel driver that is active by default, there is no configuration flag that removes the attack surface; reboot is required for the kernel fix to take effect, so schedule maintenance windows accordingly. Until patched, the effective compensating control is reducing who can reach an HTTP.sys listener with authenticated access: block inbound TCP 80/443 (and any custom HTTP.sys-registered ports) at host and network firewalls, segment management networks so low-privileged users cannot send traffic to WinRM/WSUS/IIS endpoints, and disable unused HTTP.sys-dependent services (for example IIS, WinRM listeners, or WSUS roles that are not operationally required). The trade-off is that each of these measures breaks legitimate remote HTTP management or web workloads, so scope them to the specific URLs and subnets in use, and treat them as temporary until the cumulative update is installed. Given AC:H and the race-condition nature of the bug, reliable exploitation is difficult, but because the outcome is full kernel-level privilege escalation, patching should be prioritized ahead of lower-impact fixes on internet- or user-facing multi-tenant hosts where low-privileged authenticated access is already granted.

Technical ContextAI · show details
HTTP.sys is the kernel-mode HTTP server driver that implements the Windows HTTP Server API, backing components such as IIS, WinRM, WSUS, Hyper-V live migration and numerous third-party services that register URL prefixes; because it parses untrusted network traffic in kernel context, memory-safety defects here are direct privilege-escalation primitives. This CVE is a use-after-free (CWE-416): an object reachable through crafted HTTP request handling is freed while still referenced, allowing attacker-influenced reuse of kernel pool memory. The high attack complexity (AC:H) in the assessed vector reflects that the bug is a race condition - the attacker must reliably hit the free/reuse window, which makes exploitation non-deterministic and unreliable rather than a trivial one-shot request. No user interaction is required (UI:N), and the low privileges prerequisite (PR:L) means the attacker must already possess a valid low-privileged authenticated session or service context able to reach an HTTP.sys listener. The CPE data shows the exposed surface is not a separately installed product but the operating system itself: Windows 11 23H2/24H2/25H2/26H1 on arm64 and x64, and Windows Server 2025, meaning any unpatched host running a service bound to HTTP.sys is in scope.

Use after free in Windows HTTP.sys allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges over a network.
Executive ViewAI
Microsoft Windows 11 (23H2, 24H2, 25H2, 26H1) and Windows Server 2025, including Server Core, are affected by a high-severity elevation-of-privilege flaw in the kernel-mode HTTP.sys driver that could allow an authenticated low-privileged attacker to gain SYSTEM-level control of a host. Although no public exploit identified at time of analysis and current exploitation pressure is low, successful exploitation would give an attacker complete control of the affected system, making timely remediation important for endpoint and server fleets. Leadership should prioritize these builds for patching because the flaw touches core HTTP services that support many internal and external applications.
