The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The Windows DHCP Server role must be installed and actively running on an affected Windows Server version - general-purpose Windows Server installations without the DHCP Server role are not affected. The attacker must be able to reach UDP port 67 on the target host with a crafted packet; no authentication, session state, or prior access is required. Exploitation is limited to availability impact only (service crash/DoS): confidentiality and integrity are unaffected per CVSS C:N/I:N. No special non-default configuration is required beyond the DHCP Server role being active. Internet-facing DHCP servers are unusual in most environments, so in practice the attacker typically needs to be on an adjacent network or have achieved some prior foothold enabling UDP/67 reachability.

Impact

The CVSS 7.5 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) describes a low-complexity, zero-authentication, network-reachable denial-of-service with high availability impact. For organizations where Windows DHCP Server is a critical infrastructure component, disruption of the service causes widespread network outages for all dependent clients. No KEV listing and no public POC have been identified at time of analysis, which somewhat reduces the urgency compared to actively exploited issues; however, the zero-friction exploitation prerequisites mean any attacker who can reach UDP/67 can trigger the bug. The 'Authentication Bypass' tag in the source metadata is not supported by the vulnerability - the CVSS PR:N metric encodes that no authentication is required, which is distinct from an authentication bypass flaw; this tag is mislabeled. The 'Memory Corruption' tag is broadly consistent with a type confusion root cause. Prioritization should be driven by whether the DHCP Server role is exposed: internet-facing DHCP servers are rare but highest risk, while internal-only deployments are exposed only to insider or lateral-movement threats.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker reachable over the network sends a specially crafted DHCP request packet to UDP port 67 on a vulnerable Windows DHCP Server, triggering the type confusion flaw in the service's packet parsing logic. The server accesses memory using an incompatible type, causing the DHCP Server process to crash. Network clients dependent on the server for IP address assignment lose connectivity until the service is manually restarted or the host is rebooted. No public POC has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 08, 2026

Type confusion (CWE-843) in the Windows DHCP Server service enables unauthenticated remote attackers to crash or deny service to the DHCP daemon over the network. The flaw spans Windows Server 2012 through 2025 and Windows 10 builds where the DHCP Server role is installed. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis, but the CVSS 7.5 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N vector signals straightforward, low-complexity network exploitation requiring no authentication.

RemediationAI

Apply Microsoft's security update as detailed in the MSRC advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-77889. Patched fixed versions per EUVD-2026-73279 are: Windows Server 2012 ≥ 6.2.9200.26349, Windows Server 2012 R2 ≥ 6.3.9600.23397, Windows Server 2016 ≥ 10.0.14393.9512, Windows Server 2019 ≥ 10.0.17763.9245, Windows Server 2022 ≥ 10.0.20348.5622, and Windows Server 2025 ≥ 10.0.26100.33438. As a compensating control prior to patching, restrict network access to UDP port 67 on DHCP servers using perimeter firewalls or Windows Firewall rules to permit only traffic from trusted network segments - noting that this will disrupt DHCP service for clients outside the allowed subnets, so scope must be defined carefully. Disabling the DHCP Server role entirely on non-essential hosts eliminates exposure but requires migrating IP assignment responsibilities to a patched or unaffected server.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is a type confusion flaw (CWE-843) in the Windows DHCP Server component, where the service accesses a resource using a type incompatible with the actual resource type. This class of bug typically arises when a code path handles a union, polymorphic structure, or pointer without validating the underlying type, causing the runtime to misinterpret memory layout. The DHCP Server (dhcpssvc.dll/dhcpserver.exe) is a network-facing service processing untrusted UDP packets on port 67, making it directly reachable without prior authentication. The CVSS impact metrics (C:N/I:N/A:H) confirm the bug leads to a crash or service disruption rather than code execution or data exfiltration, consistent with a type confusion path that corrupts internal state but does not provide attacker-controlled write primitives. Affected versions span Windows Server 2012 through 2025 as identified in EUVD-2026-73279.

DescriptionCVE.org

Access of resource using incompatible type ('type confusion') in Windows DHCP Server allows an unauthorized attacker to deny service over a network.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

The Windows DHCP Server service (versions Server 2012-2025 and Windows 10 with the DHCP role installed) contains a remote denial-of-service vulnerability exploitable by unauthenticated attackers over the network. An attacker can crash the DHCP daemon, preventing IP address assignment and disrupting network connectivity until service recovery or patching occurs. Organizations operating DHCP infrastructure should prioritize patching to restore service resilience and maintain network availability.
