| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an attacker who already holds high-privilege access (PR:H) on or to the Windows Server hosting the DHCP Server role - this is not a zero-touch remote exploit. The DHCP Server role must be installed and active (not a default configuration on all Windows Servers). User interaction (UI:R) is required, meaning the attack depends on a privileged user performing some management action or processing a crafted request during the attack window. Limiting factors: attackers without pre-existing elevated credentials cannot directly exploit this; DHCP Server must be explicitly deployed and reachable on the network; patched builds are immune. The attack surface is restricted to environments running the DHCP Server role, which is primarily enterprise AD-joined Windows Server deployments. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects a nuanced threat profile: network reachability and low complexity inflate risk, but the PR:H (requires existing high-privilege foothold) and UI:R (some user interaction required) substantially limit the attacker pool. This is not an opportunistic internet-facing attack; exploitation requires an adversary who already holds elevated administrative credentials or an existing privileged session on the target Windows Server. The combination of PR:H and UI:R suggests the attack may require a privileged user to perform an action (e.g., open a management tool or handle a crafted request) while connected to the DHCP service. Full C:H/I:H/A:H impact indicates that successful exploitation yields complete compromise of the DHCP server process - potentially disrupting IP address allocation across the network segment. No EPSS data or KEV listing is present in the input, meaning no confirmed active exploitation or widespread scanning is documented. Exploitation probability should be treated as moderate-to-low given the high privilege prerequisite, but the lateral-movement potential (DHCP control = network infrastructure control) elevates organizational risk for defenders managing large Windows environments. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has already obtained a privileged Windows domain or local account with access to the DHCP server's management interface crafts or replays a specially formed management request targeting the unauthenticated critical function. By inducing a legitimate high-privilege user to trigger a specific management operation (satisfying the UI:R requirement), the attacker's request bypasses the missing authentication check, executing code or commands with elevated DHCP server process privileges - potentially enabling manipulation of all IP lease assignments or further lateral movement across the network. Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026
Privilege escalation in Windows DHCP Server allows an already-authorized (high-privilege) network attacker to gain further elevated privileges by exploiting a missing authentication check on a critical server function (CWE-306). The vulnerability spans nearly every supported Windows Server release from 2012 through 2025, as well as Windows 10 1607/1809. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and Microsoft has issued patches across all affected builds.
RemediationAI
Apply the Microsoft security update for the affected build of Windows Server. Exact target versions by platform: Windows Server 2012 → 6.2.9200.26349 or later; Windows Server 2012 R2 → 6.3.9600.23397 or later; Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 1607 → 10.0.14393.9512 or later; Windows Server 2019 and Windows 10 1809 → 10.0.17763.9245 or later; Windows Server 2022 → 10.0.20348.5622 or later; Windows Server 2025 → 10.0.26100.33438 or later. The vendor advisory is at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-69415. As a compensating control before patching, restrict network access to the Windows DHCP Server management interfaces (RPC, TCP 135 and high ephemeral ports) to trusted management hosts only using host-based firewall rules or network segmentation - this limits who can attempt the privilege-escalating call. Note that blocking DHCP management ports may disrupt remote DHCP administration tools (DHCP MMC snap-in, netsh dhcp), so apply with caution on servers managed remotely.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The Windows DHCP Server service (dhcpssvc.dll) exposes administrative RPC/management interfaces to manage leases, scopes, and server configuration. CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function) indicates that one or more management operations accept requests and execute privileged actions without enforcing the expected authentication handshake, even though the caller already holds some level of elevated network access. This class of flaw typically arises when an intermediate management layer trusts a caller's identity based on an earlier step in a session, omitting a re-authentication or authorization token check on a sensitive sub-function. Affected CPE covers Windows Server 2012 through 2025 (Server Core and full installations) and Windows 10 version 1607/1809, all sharing the same DHCP Server component codebase.
