| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires only network reachability of the AVideo web application and possession of any one valid notifyCode ciphertext previously issued by the target (or a compatible instance), since it is replayed without validation - no user credentials, no user interaction, and default configurations are affected. The limiting factors are: the notify.ffmpeg.json.php endpoint must be internet/network reachable and not blocked by an upstream WAF/allowlist, and the attacker must obtain at least one previously issued ciphertext to use as the replay token; successful RCE additionally depends on the webroot allowing PHP execution of the written file. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not a paper-tiger high score. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, 9.3) is internally consistent with the description: fully remote, no authentication, no user interaction, and a write-anywhere primitive into a PHP webroot yields code execution - so high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact are all defensible. The replay-token bypass removes the only gating control, so exploitation is automatable once the request shape is known. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public PoC is provided in the input, so exploitation status is currently 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the risk is driven by ease of exploitation and impact rather than by confirmed in-the-wild activity. The main tempering factor is deployment footprint: AVideo is a niche self-hosted platform, so widespread mass exploitation is less likely than targeted attacks against exposed instances. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker captures or reuses any previously issued AVideo notifyCode ciphertext, then sends an unauthenticated POST to notify.ffmpeg.json.php with avideoRelativePath set to a traversal path targeting the webroot and a PHP payload as the written content. Because the token is decrypted but never validated, the request is accepted and a webshell is written to a web-accessible directory, which the attacker then requests to achieve remote code execution as the web server user. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 05, 2026
Unauthenticated arbitrary file write in WWBN AVideo's notify.ffmpeg.json.php endpoint lets remote attackers plant files anywhere under the application root by supplying an attacker-chosen path in the avideoRelativePath parameter. Authentication is trivially defeated because the notifyCode token is any previously issued ciphertext replayed back - the server decrypts it but never validates it - enabling a straight path from unauthenticated request to writing a PHP webshell and remote code execution. Reported by VulnCheck; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the advisory describes the technique in enough detail to reproduce.
RemediationAI
Apply the fix referenced in the vendor's GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-cprx-fggj-7vpq (https://github.com/WWBN/AVideo/security/advisories/GHSA-cprx-fggj-7vpq) - the input does not name an exact version, so patch to the fixed release identified there (patch available per vendor advisory; released version not independently confirmed from input). If immediate patching is not possible, block or restrict access to the notify.ffmpeg.json.php endpoint at the web server/WAF layer (allowlist only the ffmpeg/transcoder hosts that legitimately call it) - trade-off: may break transcoding-completion notifications if callers are not correctly allowlisted. Additionally, reject or sanitize avideoRelativePath values containing traversal sequences ('../', absolute paths, null bytes) via WAF rules, and ensure the web root and upload directories are mounted non-executable for PHP where feasible to blunt webshell execution - trade-off: does not stop the file write itself, only its use as RCE. See the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/wwbn-avideo-unauthenticated-path-traversal-via-notify-ffmpeg-json-php) for details.

Technical ContextAI · show details
WWBN AVideo is an open-source PHP video streaming/CMS platform (cpe:2.3:a:wwbn:avideo). The flaw is CWE-73 (External Control of File Name or Path): the ffmpeg notification callback handler notify.ffmpeg.json.php takes a caller-controlled relative path (avideoRelativePath) and uses it to construct a filesystem write target without canonicalizing or constraining it to a safe base directory, so traversal sequences resolve to the webroot and its subdirectories. The authentication layer is a bespoke encrypted-token scheme (notifyCode): the code decrypts the ciphertext but performs no integrity/replay/nonce validation, so any valid ciphertext ever emitted by the application can be re-submitted to satisfy the check - a cryptographic replay / broken authentication (CWE-294-class) weakness compounding the path traversal into an unauthenticated file write.

Remote, unauthenticated, no interaction file-write into the webroot yields code execution, so high C/I/A; token replay makes access trivial (PR:N/AC:L).

DescriptionCVE.org
WWBN AVideo contains a path traversal vulnerability in notify.ffmpeg.json.php that allows unauthenticated attackers to write files to arbitrary locations by supplying a caller-chosen path in the avideoRelativePath parameter. Attackers can replay any previously issued ciphertext as a notifyCode token, which is decrypted but never validated, to bypass authentication and write files to the application root and subdirectories.

Technical POC Analysis
The supplied advisory identifies CWE-22, CWE-306 and CWE-434; it does not contain the CVE/CVSS/CWE values from the prompt.

Executive ViewAI
WWBN AVideo installations are vulnerable to unauthenticated remote code execution through the notify.ffmpeg.json.php endpoint, allowing attackers to upload malicious files and achieve full application compromise without authentication. Any internet-facing AVideo instance can be immediately taken over and weaponized for malware distribution, phishing, or unauthorized content hosting. With no vendor patch available, emergency containment and platform replacement planning are critical.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: implement WAF rules to block all HTTP requests to notify.ffmpeg.json.php; restrict firewall access to the notify endpoint to internal-only traffic; set strict file permissions (e.g., 555) on application directories to prevent unauthorized writes; deploy file integrity monitoring and web shell detection scanning the application root directory daily; disable video transcoding notifications at the application level if operationally feasible; implement intrusion detection signatures for .php file creation events in web-accessible paths.
