5DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in Rancher Manager. Project Secrets were propagated into a namespace based only on its field.cattle.io/projectId annotation, without verifying that the referenced project belonged to the same downstream cluster. A user able to create namespaces on one cluster could set the annotation to a project ID from another cluster and have that project's secrets copied into a namespace under their control.
This issue affects Rancher: before 2.15.1.
AnalysisAI
Cross-cluster secret exfiltration in Rancher Manager before 2.15.1 allows any authenticated user with namespace-creation rights on one downstream cluster to read Project Secrets belonging to a completely separate downstream cluster. The secretsController propagates secrets based solely on the user-writable field.cattle.io/projectId annotation, skipping validation that the referenced project belongs to the same cluster - a classic CWE-639 insecure direct object reference pattern. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an authenticated Rancher account (PR:L) with permission to create namespaces or set annotations on namespaces on at least one downstream cluster. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The vendor-assigned CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N yielding 7.7 is well-calibrated. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade Rancher Manager to v2.15.1 or later; the release at https://github.com/rancher/rancher/releases/tag/v2.15.1 confirms the secretsController now validates that the project referenced by `field.cattle.io/projectId` belongs to the same downstream cluster before propagating secrets. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all Rancher Manager instances in production and confirm version numbers to determine exposure (vulnerable if < 2.15.1). …
