Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires local access with at least low-privilege user credentials on a system running an unpatched Linux kernel (between commit f08e7a4e8d6a and the fix commits) compiled with the MediaTek MFG power-domain driver (CONFIG_MTK_MFG_POWER_DOMAIN or equivalent enabled). The defect is triggered only during mtk_mfg_attach_dev() execution, which occurs at driver initialization or device hotplug time on hardware with a compatible MediaTek GPU power domain (e.g., specific MediaTek Dimensity or Helio SoC families). Whether the uninitialized prev_o evaluates as non-NULL depends on stack layout and prior kernel activity, making triggering the fault non-deterministic. Systems without MediaTek GPU hardware are entirely unaffected regardless of kernel version.

Impact

The vendor-assigned CVSS 7.8 (C:H/I:H/A:H) likely overstates practical impact for this specific defect. The root cause is an uninitialized local variable used only for an OPP-deduplication comparison, not a heap or buffer corruption primitive; the worst realistic outcome is a kernel NULL/stale-pointer dereference during device attachment (A:H plausible as kernel panic), with incorrect OPP selection as a secondary possibility (I:L - GPU frequency misconfiguration). Confidentiality:H from the vendor vector is not supported by the described behavior - no memory read-out or data disclosure path is established. Attack complexity is practically higher than AC:L because exploitation requires MediaTek MFG hardware, an affected kernel version, and the uninitialized stack slot landing non-NULL - AC:H is more accurate. EPSS 0.19% and absence from KEV confirm this is not being weaponized. The defect is driver-specific and narrowly scoped to MediaTek GPU platforms (e.g., MediaTek Dimensity/Helio SoCs found in Android devices and some embedded Linux boards). CVSS C:H and I:H appear borrowed from a generic kernel LPE template rather than derived from this specific code path. Overall real-world priority is low.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with at least low-privilege shell access on a MediaTek GPU-equipped Linux device (e.g., an Android board or embedded SoC running mainline Linux) triggers or waits for the mtk_mfg_attach_dev() code path during driver initialization or hotplug. If the uninitialized prev_o variable holds a non-NULL garbage value inherited from prior stack contents, the kernel dereferences the invalid pointer, triggering a kernel oops or panic and crashing the system. No public proof-of-concept exists and deterministic exploitation requires stack layout control, making this scenario unlikely without access to debug or development environments.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 04, 2026

Uninitialized pointer dereference in the Linux kernel's MediaTek GPU power-domain driver (pmdomain/mediatek/mfg) can trigger a kernel fault or incorrect OPP (Operating Performance Point) configuration on first device attachment. The prev_o variable in mtk_mfg_attach_dev() is read in a conditional branch on the first loop iteration before ever being assigned, meaning it holds an indeterminate stack value; if that value is non-NULL, the kernel dereferences a stale or garbage pointer. Affected versions span stable kernel trees from commit f08e7a4e8d6a through the fixed points in 7.1.10, 7.2, and 6.19. No public exploit code and no CISA KEV listing are present; EPSS at 0.19% (9th percentile) reflects minimal real-world exploitation interest.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is upgrading to patched kernel versions: Linux 6.19, 7.1.10, or 7.2. The upstream fix (a single-line prev_o = NULL initialization) is available in two stable-branch commits: de4eec0dfde8c0e27f8915bbb244d17ff68f2fb4 and 090a95dbe13df9965279b588d97eda134831769c, both accessible at git.kernel.org. For systems that cannot be immediately upgraded, a compensating control is to disable or blacklist the mtk-mfg-pmdomain kernel module if the MediaTek GPU power domain is not operationally required - note this will prevent GPU frequency scaling on affected MediaTek hardware. Distribution-maintained kernels (Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, etc.) should be tracked for backport availability. Android device vendors shipping MediaTek SoCs should apply the patch in their next kernel update cycle.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in drivers/pmdomain/mediatek/mfg.c, specifically the mtk_mfg_attach_dev() function responsible for building OPP tables for MediaTek's GPU power domains (MFG subsystem). The C language permits uninitialized local variables to hold arbitrary stack contents. On the first iteration of the OPP-deduplication loop, prev_o - intended to track the previously processed OPP - is evaluated in if (prev_o && prev_o->freq == o->freq) before any assignment occurs. If the stack frame happens to contain a non-zero value at prev_o's address, the short-circuit evaluation proceeds to prev_o->freq, dereferencing a potentially invalid pointer in kernel context. Clang's -Wconditional-uninitialized static analysis detected this defect. While no formal CWE is assigned, this maps to CWE-457 (Use of Uninitialized Variable). The fix is a single-line initialization: prev_o = NULL. CPE: cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, limited in practice to kernels compiled with the Mediatek MFG power domain driver and running on MediaTek GPU-equipped hardware.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

pmdomain: mediatek: mfg: initialize prev_o in mtk_mfg_attach_dev()

mtk_mfg_attach_dev() reads prev_o on the first iteration of its loop, in "if (prev_o && prev_o->freq == o->freq)", before prev_o is assigned at the end of the loop body. On that first iteration, evaluating prev_o reads an indeterminate value. If it is non-NULL, the condition dereferences a stale or invalid pointer, potentially faulting or incorrectly skipping the first OPP.

Initialize prev_o to NULL. This matches the intent as well: there is no previous OPP to compare against on the first iteration.

Found with Clang's -Wconditional-uninitialized.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A kernel stability vulnerability in Linux systems with MediaTek GPU drivers can cause system crashes or incorrect power-performance configurations during device attachment, with CVSS 7.8 severity. Organizations deploying MediaTek GPU-equipped servers or embedded Linux systems face potential service interruptions until patched. While real-world exploitation interest remains minimal (EPSS 0.2%), kernel availability defects pose inherent operational risk that justifies prompt patching.
