Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires Nuclio to be deployed in 'local Docker platform' mode - this is distinct from Kubernetes-based Nuclio deployments, which use a different container management path and are not affected. The default authentication kind for the local Docker platform is 'nop' (unauthenticated), meaning no credentials are needed by default; if an operator has configured a non-nop auth kind, exploitation is limited to authenticated users who can influence namespace values. The dashboard container must have the Docker socket mounted (standard for local Docker mode). The attacker must have network reachability to the Nuclio dashboard API port. No special race condition, heap spray, or other exploit technique is required - the shell injection is direct string substitution.

Impact

The provided CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, score 8.0) conflicts materially with the vulnerability description: the description explicitly states the default authentication kind is 'nop' (unauthenticated), which makes PR:H incorrect for default configurations. If the local Docker platform is assessed with its default nop auth, the vector should carry PR:N, raising the score to 9.0 or above. AC:H may be justified by the requirement for the 'local Docker platform' deployment mode (vs. Kubernetes), which is a non-production-default context - this is a legitimate complexity argument. No EPSS score or CISA KEV listing is present in the provided data; no public exploit has been identified. The scope-change (S:C) with C:H/I:H/A:H is well-supported: dashboard container → Docker socket → full host control is a canonical Docker privilege-escalation path. Despite the absence of a KEV listing, the attack is straightforward and the exploit primitive (breaking out of a double-quoted shell string) is well understood - defenders running Nuclio in local Docker mode should treat this as high priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated remote attacker sends an HTTP request to the Nuclio dashboard API specifying a function namespace value containing ";touch /tmp/pwned;echo " - precisely the test case embedded in the PR diff. The malformed value terminates the double-quoted filter argument in the shell command, causing the injected touch /tmp/pwned (or any arbitrary command) to execute as root inside the dashboard container. Because the dashboard container mounts the Docker host's Unix socket, the attacker can escalate immediately to full Docker host control, for example by creating a privileged container with a host filesystem bind mount.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 02, 2026

OS command injection in Nuclio's local Docker platform dashboard allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary shell commands as root inside the dashboard container, which holds the Docker socket, enabling full host compromise. The function namespace value - controllable via the unauthenticated (default 'nop' auth) API - is string-interpolated without quoting into a docker ps --filter command executed via /bin/sh -c, allowing a double-quote character to break out of the filter token and inject arbitrary commands. The issue is fixed in version 1.17.4, with the patch confirmed via GitHub release tag and PR #4220; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Nuclio to version 1.17.4 or later; this release applies shell quoting (via common.Quote()) to all docker ps --filter arguments including label values, preventing injection. The fix is confirmed in commit 24582ac354d04951ec6786b3fe6ccf3b32652e9f and released at https://github.com/nuclio/nuclio/releases/tag/1.17.4. If immediate upgrade is not possible, enabling a non-nop authentication kind in the Nuclio dashboard configuration will require credentials before any namespace value can be submitted, blocking unauthenticated exploitation - however this does not remediate the injection flaw itself and authenticated attackers remain capable of exploitation. As an additional defense-in-depth measure, network-restrict the dashboard API port to trusted management networks only, reducing the attack surface to authorized users.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in pkg/dockerclient/shell.go within Nuclio's ShellClient.GetContainers() function (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:nuclio:nuclio:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). Label filter values - including the namespace label nuclio.io/namespace that originates from attacker-controlled input - were formatted directly into the shell string docker ps --quiet --filter "label=nuclio.io/namespace=<value>" and then passed to /bin/sh -c for execution. CWE-78 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command) is the exact root cause: the absence of shell quoting means a double-quote in the namespace value terminates the filter token, and subsequent characters are interpreted by the shell as separate commands. The dashboard container runs with the Docker socket mounted as a design feature of the local Docker platform deployment mode, making root command execution in the container equivalent to Docker host compromise.

DescriptionCVE.org

Nuclio is a "Serverless" framework for Real-Time Events and Data Processing. Prior to version 1.17.4, on the Nuclio local Docker platform, the function namespace is interpolated-unvalidated-into a double-quoted docker ps --filter "label=nuclio.io/namespace=<value>" command that is executed via the host shell (/bin/sh -c). Because the default auth kind is nop (unauthenticated), a remote attacker can inject arbitrary OS commands that run as root inside the dashboard container, which holds the Docker socket → host compromise. This issue has been patched in version 1.17.4.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Nuclio's Docker platform dashboard is vulnerable to unauthenticated remote code execution as root, enabling complete host compromise and hijacking of the Docker daemon. Any internet-accessible Nuclio instance represents an immediate infrastructure takeover risk requiring urgent patching.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch. Until version 1.17.4 is deployed, restrict Nuclio dashboard network access to administrative networks and monitor Docker daemon API calls for unauthorized activity.
