1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires a valid authenticated Kibana session (PR:L) - unauthenticated attackers cannot exploit this. The user must hold at least a basic Kibana role that grants login access, but explicitly should NOT hold machine_learning_user or machine_learning_admin privileges. The ML feature must be enabled in the Elastic Stack deployment (it is enabled by default in licensed tiers that include ML). Impact is strictly bounded to availability (resource consumption on the Elasticsearch cluster); no data exfiltration or configuration modification is possible via this flaw. Exploitation does not require user interaction from another party.

Impact

The CVSS 4.3 Medium rating is consistent with real-world risk here. The vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L confirms that exploitation requires a valid authenticated session (PR:L), reducing the exposed attack surface to users with at least a basic Kibana account. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact - the sole consequence is availability degradation (A:L) through unauthorized ML job execution consuming cluster resources. No public exploit code has been identified and this CVE does not appear in the CISA KEV catalog, making opportunistic exploitation unlikely. The absence of EPSS data prevents quantitative exploitation-probability comparison. Real-world priority is low to medium: organizations running multi-tenant Kibana deployments where untrusted authenticated users exist (e.g., SaaS platforms or shared analytics environments) face higher relative risk than those where all Kibana users are trusted employees. The 'Authentication Bypass' tag in the metadata is a mislabel - this is post-authentication authorization failure, not an authentication bypass.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated Kibana user assigned a read-only or viewer role crafts direct requests to Kibana's internal ML API endpoints - such as those for starting anomaly detection jobs - that should require machine_learning_admin privileges. Due to the incorrect authorization check, Kibana forwards these requests to Elasticsearch, which executes the ML jobs, consuming significant CPU and memory on the cluster. Repeated invocations could degrade Elasticsearch performance for legitimate users and operators.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 02, 2026

Incorrect Authorization (CWE-863) in Kibana's machine learning feature allows authenticated users to invoke ML functionality beyond their assigned authorization scope, consuming Elasticsearch cluster resources they are not permitted to access. Affected across all Kibana versions prior to the 8.19.21, 9.4.6, and 9.5.2 releases patched under Elastic advisory ESA-2026-169. No confidentiality or integrity impact is present; exploitation is bounded to cluster resource exhaustion, with CVSS 4.3 (Medium) reflecting the limited blast radius and authentication prerequisite.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Kibana to version 8.19.21, 9.4.6, or 9.5.2 as directed by Elastic advisory ESA-2026-169 (https://discuss.elastic.co/t/kibana-8-19-21-9-4-6-9-5-2-security-update-esa-2026-169/390119). As a compensating control for environments that cannot patch immediately, administrators should audit and tighten Kibana role assignments by removing the machine_learning_user and machine_learning_admin privileges from any accounts that do not operationally require ML access; this reduces the population of users who could trigger the flaw, though the underlying authorization bypass remains until the patch is applied. Additionally, Elasticsearch-level resource limits (ml.max_machine_memory_percent, xpack.ml.max_open_jobs) can cap the blast radius of unauthorized ML job execution without blocking legitimate workloads.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Kibana (cpe:2.3:a:elastic:kibana:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is the visualization and management front-end for the Elastic Stack, communicating with Elasticsearch over an internal API. The machine learning feature allows users to run anomaly detection and data-frame analytics jobs that are CPU- and memory-intensive on the underlying Elasticsearch cluster. CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) indicates that the authorization check is present but misconfigured: Kibana validates identity but fails to correctly enforce ML role-based boundaries, allowing a lower-privileged account to reach ML API surfaces that should be gated behind a higher-privilege role such as machine_learning_user or machine_learning_admin. The attack pattern is CAPEC-180, exploiting improperly configured access control levels post-authentication.
