MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target Erlang TCP port be network-reachable from the attacker and explicitly configured to use {packet,4} framing - a developer-specified opt-in mode, not a universal default for all Erlang TCP sockets. No authentication is required (PR:N per the CVSS 4.0 vector); exploitation consists of sending a single crafted packet. Exploitation is limited to availability impact (VM crash); the vendor advisory explicitly states remote code execution is 'extremely unfeasible' due to imprecision of heap corruption at the scale triggered. Applications using other framing modes ({packet,0}, {packet,1}, {packet,2}, or raw) are not affected. OTP versions before 17.0 have unknown exposure status per the vendor advisory. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.2 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H) accurately reflects a remotely triggerable, unauthenticated denial-of-service with no confidentiality or integrity impact. AT:P correctly captures the prerequisite that the targeted service must be configured for {packet,4} framing, which reduces universality of exposure compared to a fully default-exploitable flaw - the attacker must first identify a service using this specific mode. The primary real-world risk is service availability: crashing the BEAM VM terminates all Erlang processes in that instance, which is severe for long-running telecommunications switches, message brokers (e.g., RabbitMQ), ejabberd deployments, or distributed systems workloads that depend on continuous uptime. No CISA KEV listing and no confirmed public exploit code reduce opportunistic mass-exploitation probability, though targeted attacks against known Erlang service endpoints remain plausible once the flaw is understood by threat actors. The 'RCE' tag in the input metadata conflicts directly with the vendor's own advisory text, which explicitly states RCE is 'extremely unfeasible'; this tag should be treated as mislabeled. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach an exposed Erlang TCP service configured with {packet,4} framing establishes a connection and sends a single malformed message with a packet length field set to a value near INT_MAX. The signed integer overflow in packet_get_length causes the runtime to attempt a multi-gigabyte buffer allocation, corrupting VM allocator metadata and adjacent heap structures; the BEAM VM crashes immediately, terminating all Erlang processes in that instance. No authentication or prior session state is required, and no public exploit code has been confirmed. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 01, 2026
The BEAM runtime in Erlang/OTP crashes when a remote attacker sends a crafted packet to any exposed TCP port using the inet driver with {packet,4} framing, exploiting a signed integer overflow in packet length calculation inside packet_parser.c and inet_drv.c. Affected deployments span OTP release lines 17 through 29, with vendor-released patches available (27.3.4.17, 28.5.0.6, and 29.0.6); no active exploitation is confirmed in CISA KEV and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. The vendor explicitly characterizes remote code execution as 'extremely unfeasible,' making denial-of-service via VM crash the realistic worst-case impact.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Erlang/OTP to a patched release: 27.3.4.17 or later for the OTP 27.x branch, 28.5.0.6 or later for OTP 28.x, or 29.0.6 or later for OTP 29.x, as documented at https://github.com/erlang/otp/security/advisories/GHSA-8m6r-2pj2-25pm; the upstream fix commit is https://github.com/erlang/otp/commit/08e8efdba8500d2d6f54c6b1de1492b228017c9b. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict network access to all Erlang TCP ports via firewall rules or network segmentation so only trusted peers can connect - this eliminates remote attack surface but requires maintaining network-level access controls as a compensating measure. Operators should audit which services use {packet,4} framing to determine actual exposure scope; services using other packet modes ({packet,0}, {packet,1}, {packet,2}, or raw) are not affected and require no compensating controls.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability resides in the Erlang Runtime System (erts) inet driver, spanning packet_parser.c and inet_drv.c (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:erlang:otp). The {packet,4} framing mode prepends a 4-byte big-endian integer to each TCP message to declare its payload length. In the vulnerable code, packet_get_length computes the total length as tlen = hlen + plen using signed 32-bit integer arithmetic; a crafted plen value near INT_MAX causes signed integer overflow, producing a negative tlen that defeats the wrap-around guard (tlen < (int)hlen), permitting the runtime to attempt allocation of a receive buffer up to approximately 2 GB beyond intended bounds and corrupting VM allocator metadata and adjacent heap blocks. Separately, tcp_expand_buffer computed ulen = used + len without an overflow guard. CWE-190 (Integer Overflow or Wraparound) is the root cause. The patch clamps max_plen to INT_MAX - hlen in the parser and adds an explicit guard (len > INT_MAX - used) before the buffer expansion, preventing both overflow paths.

DescriptionCVE.org
An attacker that connects to an open Erlang TCP port that uses the inet driver with {packet,4} mode can use a signed overflow in an incorrect packet length calculation to overflow the receive buffer into the VM allocator area and beyond up to about 2 GB.
This would easily trash the allocated block's allocator metadata footer, and the next block, if any, and most likely cause the BEAM VM to crash. Utilizing this with precision enough to achieve Remote Code Execution would be extremely unfeasible.
This issue affects OTP from OTP 17.0 before OTP 27.3.4.17, from OTP 28.0 before OTP 28.5.0.6, and from OTP 29.0 before OTP 29.0.6, corresponding to erts from 6.0 before 15.2.7.13, from 16.0 before 16.4.0.6, and from 17.0 before 17.0.6. Whether OTP before OTP 17.0, corresponding to erts before 6.0, is affected is unknown.

Executive ViewAI
Erlang/OTP deployments across versions 17-29 are vulnerable to remote denial-of-service attacks via crafted network packets when TCP ports are exposed to untrusted networks. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, though the vulnerability enables VM crashes affecting service continuity. Organizations must prioritize patching to prevent production outages.
