Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires: (1) local system access, and (2) CAP_NET_ADMIN capability - obtainable without root on systems with unprivileged user namespaces enabled (default on Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 11+, Fedora, and most Kubernetes node OSes). The trigger is specific: an HFSC qdisc must be created on a network interface, at least two HFSC classes added, a U32 filter with a u32 match rule attached to a class, and a second class subsequently added - exactly the four-command sequence in the description. Standard unprivileged users on systems where kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone=0 or equivalent restrictions are enforced cannot trigger the vulnerability. Exploitation is further limited to network-namespace-capable environments; hardened systems using seccomp profiles that block NETLINK_ROUTE are not reachable. There is no remote attack vector - physical or shell access is an absolute prerequisite. |
| Impact | The vendor-assigned CVSS 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) accurately characterizes this as a high-severity local privilege escalation with low attack complexity. The PR:L designation is appropriate because, while tc manipulation nominally requires CAP_NET_ADMIN, Linux systems with user namespaces enabled (the default on Ubuntu, Debian, and most container runtimes) allow unprivileged users to acquire CAP_NET_ADMIN within a network namespace - enabling direct reproduction via the documented tc commands. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified numerically. The absence of a KEV listing and no identified public POC suggest this is not currently under mass exploitation, but the deterministic reproduction steps embedded in the CVE description lower the bar for weaponization. The full C:H/I:H/A:H impact is plausible given that controlled slab heap corruption is a well-established kernel privilege escalation primitive. Risk is elevated for multi-tenant Linux hosts, Kubernetes nodes, and container environments where user namespace access is broadly granted. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local attacker with access to user namespaces (available by default on most modern Linux distributions) creates a network namespace to obtain CAP_NET_ADMIN, then issues the exact sequence of tc commands documented in the CVE description: adding an HFSC qdisc, multiple HFSC classes, and a U32 filter. When the second class bind triggers u32_bind_class() to walk the U32 classifier tree, a tc_u_hnode is passed and miscast, causing a slab-out-of-bounds read that can be leveraged for heap layout manipulation and subsequent root privilege escalation. No public POC has been identified, but the deterministic reproduction steps in the description effectively constitute a technical blueprint. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 27, 2026
Slab-out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel's cls_u32 traffic classifier allows a local user with networking privileges to corrupt kernel heap memory and escalate to root. The flaw exists in u32_bind_class(), which unconditionally casts all objects enumerated by u32_walk() as tc_u_knode structures, even when the object is a tc_u_hnode (hash table), which lacks the tcf_result member - causing an out-of-bounds access to res->classid. Patches have been released across multiple stable kernel branches (6.1.184, 6.6.153, 6.12.105, 6.18.46, 7.1.10, 7.2), and no public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
The primary remediation is to upgrade to a patched Linux kernel version: 6.1.184, 6.6.153, 6.12.105, 6.18.46, 7.1.10, or 7.2+. Stable-tree fix commits are published at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/ec5f3005586a785689fd568361b0c5925cb1548b and the branch-parallel commits referenced in the EUVD entry. Distributions (RHEL, Debian, Ubuntu, SUSE) will backport these fixes to their own kernel packages - apply vendor security updates as they become available. As a compensating control on unpatched systems, restrict CAP_NET_ADMIN by disabling unprivileged user namespaces (sysctl -w kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone=0 on systems that support this knob, or kernel.unprivileged_userns_apparmor_policy=1 on Ubuntu), which eliminates the most accessible privilege path. Note that disabling user namespaces may break container runtimes such as Podman in rootless mode. Alternatively, use seccomp or AppArmor policies to block netlink socket operations (NETLINK_ROUTE) for untrusted workloads - this prevents tc qdisc/filter manipulation without affecting other networking functionality.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerable code resides in net/sched/cls_u32.c, part of the Linux kernel's traffic control (tc) subsystem. The U32 classifier uses two distinct node types: tc_u_hnode (hash table anchor nodes) and tc_u_knode (filter key nodes). The u32_walk() iterator passes both types through the same walker callback indiscriminately. u32_bind_class() receives the opaque handle (fh) from the walker and unconditionally casts it to struct tc_u_knode, then accesses &n->res (of type struct tcf_result). Because tc_u_hnode has no tcf_result member, when a hash table node is passed, the access falls outside the structure's allocated slab object, producing a slab-out-of-bounds read in tc_cls_bind_class(). The root cause is a missing type discrimination check - the fix adds a TC_U32_KEY(handle) guard to skip hash table nodes. Tagged as Buffer Overflow (slab OOB); CWE not formally assigned in the input. CPE: cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*.

4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
net/sched: cls_u32: skip hash tables in u32_bind_class()
u32_walk() enumerates both struct tc_u_hnode and struct tc_u_knode through the walker callback. u32_bind_class() unconditionally casts the passed fh to tc_u_knode and accesses &n->res, so when fh is actually a tc_u_hnode, which has no tcf_result member, this results in a slab-out-of-bounds read of res->classid in tc_cls_bind_class().
The issue can be reproduced with the following commands:
tc qdisc add dev lo root handle 1: hfsc tc class add dev lo parent 1: classid 1:1 hfsc sc rate 1000kbit tc filter add dev lo parent 1:1 protocol ip prio 1 u32 match u32 0 0 flowid 1:1 tc class add dev lo parent 1: classid 1:2 hfsc sc rate 2000kbit
Fix this by skipping hash tables via the TC_U32_KEY(handle) check.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's traffic classifier enables local privilege escalation to root, affecting systems with this networking feature enabled. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the vulnerability's severity requires urgent remediation. Patched kernel versions are available across all supported branches and should be prioritized for deployment.
