| Exploitation Conditions | Subscriber-level exploitation requires the AI Engine plugin's 'public API' feature to be explicitly enabled by a site administrator - this is a non-default configuration, so most single-site WordPress installations are not exposed to low-privilege attacks. In default configurations, the same path traversal is reachable only by users with administrator-level privileges. On WordPress multisite networks, the administrator-level vector is additionally impactful: a subsite administrator (lacking super-admin rights) can read network-shared configuration files and extract secrets such as API keys or database credentials that are shared across the entire network. What limits exploitation: subscriber-level attack requires an administrator to have deliberately enabled the public API option; default single-site installations expose only the admin vector; the SSVC rating of automatable 'no' suggests the targeting conditions make mass scanning less effective. What does not limit exploitation once conditions are met: no user interaction, no complex chaining, and low attack complexity once the feature is confirmed active. |
| Impact | CVSS 3.1 scores this at 7.7 (High) with AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N, reflecting network-accessible exploitation requiring only subscriber credentials, no user interaction, a scope change across the security boundary, and high confidentiality impact. However, this score represents the worst-case scenario: subscriber-level exploitation requires the non-default public API feature to be explicitly enabled by an administrator. In default deployments, only administrators can trigger the flaw, substantially reducing the exposed attack surface. EPSS at 0.19% (9th percentile) indicates low probability of automated exploitation, and SSVC rates exploitation as 'none' with automatable 'no' and technical impact 'partial' - all signals aligning below the CVSS headline. The publicly available POC lowers technical barrier, but the non-default condition requirement and lack of CISA KEV listing suggest this is not yet being broadly weaponized. The highest realistic risk is to WordPress multisite operators where subsite administrator accounts represent a meaningful privilege escalation surface to network-wide secrets. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker registers or obtains a subscriber-level account on a WordPress site with AI Engine installed and the public API feature enabled, then submits a crafted request with a URL containing path traversal sequences targeting sensitive files such as wp-config.php or server-level credentials. The plugin resolves the path without confinement, reads the file, and automatically forwards its contents to an external AI service endpoint configured by the attacker or accessible to them - completing a full read-and-exfiltrate chain in a single request. A publicly available POC exists that lowers the technical barrier for this attack. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 26, 2026
Path traversal in the AI Engine WordPress plugin (versions 3.3.3 through 3.7.1) allows arbitrary server file reads with subsequent exfiltration to an external service. When the plugin's non-default public API feature is enabled, subscriber-level users can supply a crafted URL that the plugin maps to a local filesystem path without confinement, reads, and forwards to an external AI endpoint. In default configurations the flaw is limited to administrator-level users, but on WordPress multisite networks this allows unprivileged subsite administrators to extract network-wide configuration secrets. A publicly available POC exists, though EPSS at 0.19% indicates no widespread automated exploitation at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Update the AI Engine WordPress plugin to version 3.7.2 or later, the vendor-released patch confirmed by WPScan (https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/1048b130-9263-4780-b886-656a891de85a/) and EUVD-2026-66281. Sites that cannot patch immediately should disable the plugin's public API feature if not actively required - this removes the subscriber-level attack vector entirely and constrains the vulnerability to administrator accounts only, drastically reducing exposure. On WordPress multisite installations, audit and minimize subsite administrator role assignments until patching is complete, as those accounts represent the most impactful exploitation path. Consider restricting outbound HTTP requests from the web server to known AI API endpoints via firewall or application-layer controls; this limits the exfiltration channel, though it does not prevent the underlying file read. Note that disabling the public API feature may break integrations relying on external AI access from non-admin users.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory - Path Traversal). The AI Engine plugin accepts a caller-supplied URL, maps it to a local filesystem path, reads the resulting file, and forwards the contents to an external service (an AI API backend). No canonicalization or directory confinement is applied before the filesystem read, allowing sequences such as ../../wp-config.php to escape the intended directory. The exfiltration step is intrinsic to the plugin's design: file contents are transmitted off-host as part of normal plugin operation, making this a read-and-leak primitive rather than just a local information disclosure. Affected versions are identified via CPE cpe:2.3:a:unknown:ai_engine:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* spanning 3.3.3 to below 3.7.2. The WordPress multisite privilege boundary failure is a secondary impact: subsite admins hold elevated trust within their site but are explicitly excluded from network-level secrets by WordPress design - this flaw bypasses that boundary.

4DescriptionCVE.org
The AI Engine WordPress plugin before 3.7.2 does not confine a caller-supplied URL when mapping it to a local filesystem path before reading the file and forwarding its contents to an external service, allowing users with a subscriber-level account to read arbitrary files from the server and exfiltrate them off-host. Reaching the issue at subscriber level requires a non-default public API feature to be enabled; otherwise the same issue is reachable by an administrator, which on multisite allows a non-super subsite administrator to read the network-shared configuration and its secrets.
Executive ViewAI
The AI Engine WordPress plugin (versions 3.3.3-3.7.1) contains a path traversal vulnerability enabling unauthorized server file access and exfiltration of configuration secrets. Organizations using affected versions face credential and configuration exposure; WordPress multisite networks are particularly at risk, where unprivileged administrators can access network-wide secrets. Vendor patches are available and must be prioritized.
Apply vendor patch. Interim mitigation: disable the public API feature and restrict subscriber-level user access until patching is completed.
