Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a local, authenticated session with a low-privilege user account (CVSS PR:L) on a FreeBSD system running one of the affected release versions. The target system must have multiple audio devices present - this is the hardware prerequisite that creates the multi-channel sync group locking scenario the vulnerable ioctl operates on; single-audio-device systems do not expose the vulnerable code path in the same way. The user must have permission to open and issue ioctls against the audio devices, which by default on FreeBSD requires membership in the 'audio' group. The attack exploits a kernel-level race condition, requiring the attacker to win a timing contest between the ioctl's sleep window and a concurrent sync group free operation. Factors limiting exploitation: no remote attack vector (AV:L - physical or pre-existing shell access required); no scope change (S:U - kernel compromise is contained to the local system); audio device access permissions must not have been further restricted by devfs rules; and the vulnerability does not affect systems without multiple audio devices or those where the sound module is not loaded.

Impact

CVSS 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects a credible local privilege escalation with no user interaction needed and full CIA impact - characteristics of a complete kernel takeover. The vendor's AC:L rating asserts reliable triggerability, though race conditions in practice can require repeated attempts; my independent assessment rates this AC:H due to the timing dependency and multi-device prerequisite (see assessed vector). EPSS at 0.16% (6th percentile) is notably low for a privilege escalation: no public POC is known, no CISA KEV listing exists, and FreeBSD's narrower deployment footprint relative to Linux limits the exposed population. The realistic threat is highest on FreeBSD multi-user workstations or interactive servers with audio hardware - scenarios common in some BSD-centric infrastructure but rare in typical enterprise data centers. On server deployments without audio devices, this vulnerability is not triggerable. The gap between CVSS 7.8 and a 6th-percentile EPSS is consistent with a credible-but-unexercised local escalation path rather than an actively targeted flaw.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged local user on a FreeBSD workstation with two or more audio devices opens the sound device and issues a crafted ioctl targeting the sync group mechanism, then races a concurrent thread to free the sync group structure during the sleep window between lock release and reacquisition. By winning this race - potentially requiring repeated attempts - the attacker dereferences freed kernel heap memory, and through controlled heap grooming redirects execution or overwrites process credential structures to gain root. No public proof-of-concept is known at time of analysis, but the CVSS AC:L vendor rating suggests the race is considered reliably exploitable.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 26, 2026

Privilege escalation in FreeBSD's kernel audio subsystem allows an unprivileged local user on systems with multiple audio devices to exploit a use-after-free in the sync group ioctl locking path to achieve full kernel compromise. The race condition arises when the ioctl releases the sync group list lock to sleep during a blocking lock attempt, and a concurrent operation frees the sync group structure before the sleeping thread reawakens and dereferences it. Affected releases include FreeBSD 14.4-RELEASE prior to p9, 15.0-RELEASE prior to p13, and 15.1-RELEASE prior to p3; no active exploitation has been confirmed (not in CISA KEV) and EPSS sits at 0.16% (6th percentile), reflecting low current threat activity.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patches: upgrade to FreeBSD 14.4-RELEASE-p9, FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p13, or FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p3 as appropriate, following the instructions in FreeBSD Security Advisory FreeBSD-SA-26:58.sound.asc at https://security.freebsd.org/advisories/FreeBSD-SA-26:58.sound.asc. The FreeBSD Project provides binary patch tooling via freebsd-update(8) for supported releases, which is the preferred remediation path. As a compensating control on systems where immediate patching is not feasible, restrict untrusted local users from accessing audio devices by removing them from the 'audio' group and applying devfs.rules(5) to deny read/write access to /dev/dsp* and /dev/mixer* for non-privileged accounts - note this will break audio for those users. On servers where audio is entirely unused, unloading the sound kernel module (kldunload sound) and adding 'sound_load="NO"' to /boot/loader.conf prevents the vulnerable code path from being reachable entirely, with no functional trade-off on headless systems.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability (CWE-416: Use After Free) resides in the FreeBSD kernel sound subsystem's ioctl handler responsible for acquiring channel locks across all members of an audio sync group - a kernel data structure used to coordinate synchronized playback or capture across multiple audio channels. The race window opens when the ioctl cannot immediately acquire a lock: it releases the sync group list lock and calls sleep(), but neglects to re-validate that the sync group structure is still live upon waking. A concurrent thread may free the structure during that sleep interval, leaving a dangling pointer. When the ioctl resumes and dereferences that pointer, it accesses freed kernel memory, which an attacker can shape via heap manipulation to redirect execution or overwrite kernel credentials. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:freebsd:freebsd:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms this is a FreeBSD-kernel-only issue; the prerequisite of multiple audio devices is what makes the race practically triggerable (multiple /dev/dsp-family devices expand the concurrent locking surface).

DescriptionCVE.org

The implementation of this ioctl attempts to acquire locks on all channels in a sync group. If locking a channel would block, it releases the sync group list lock and sleeps. Upon reawakening, it is possible that the sync group structure is freed, but the implementation did not handle this possibility.

On a system with a multiple audio devices, an unprivileged local user can exploit this use-after-free to escalate privileges.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

FreeBSD kernel audio subsystem (versions 14.4, 15.0, 15.1) contains a use-after-free vulnerability allowing unprivileged local users on systems with multiple audio devices to achieve full kernel compromise. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and current threat activity is minimal (EPSS 0.2%), but the severity of potential kernel-level compromise warrants prioritization once patches become available.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include restricting local user access on affected systems, disabling the audio subsystem where operationally permissible, isolating vulnerable FreeBSD systems via network segmentation, implementing endpoint monitoring for privilege escalation attempts, and establishing weekly checks of FreeBSD security advisories for patch availability.

Attack Technique

Privilege escalation occurs when an attacker leverages flaws in access control mechanisms to gain permissions beyond what they were originally granted.

Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
