2DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in file-roller. When opening or extracting a malicious 7z or RAR archive containing a file entry with an excessively long path, file-roller's progress-line parsing copies the path into a fixed-size stack buffer using an unbounded string copy. This can trigger a stack buffer overflow and cause file-roller to terminate, resulting in a denial of service. To exploit this flaw, a victim must open or extract the crafted archive using file-roller.
AnalysisAI
Stack buffer overflow in file-roller's archive extraction path causes denial of service when a victim opens or extracts a crafted 7z or RAR archive containing an excessively long file path entry. The unbounded string copy in the progress-line parsing routine overwrites a fixed-size stack buffer, crashing the application with no confidentiality or integrity impact. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that the victim actively open or extract a crafted archive using file-roller specifically - the vulnerable code path is in the progress-line parsing routine triggered during 7z and RAR archive operations (other formats are not identified as affected). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) correctly captures the low attack complexity and absence of privilege requirements, but the mandatory user interaction (UI:R) and availability-only impact materially constrain real-world risk. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker crafts a 7z or RAR archive containing a file entry whose embedded path exceeds the fixed-size stack buffer in file-roller's progress-line parser, then distributes it via phishing email, a malicious download link, or a file-sharing service. When the victim saves and opens the archive using file-roller on a GNOME desktop, the unbounded string copy operation overflows the stack buffer and crashes the application. … |
| Remediation | The upstream fix is available as GNOME GitLab commit ffb76dc866342cef6a4914873faaa880d14d5aa4 (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/file-roller/-/commit/ffb76dc866342cef6a4914873faaa880d14d5aa4); a specific tagged file-roller release version incorporating this fix was not confirmed in the provided references. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
