MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must hold the named 'power' Splunk role within the target Splunk Enterprise instance - this is an assignable role that grants tour creation capabilities and sits above a basic user but below the admin role. The victim must actively open a crafted tour link (UI:R is confirmed in the CVSS vector); passive use of Splunk Web does not trigger the vulnerability. The Splunk Web interface must be enabled in the deployment, which is the default configuration. Exploitation is strictly confined to the browser-based Splunk Web context and does not affect Splunk REST API endpoints, universal forwarders, indexers, or the underlying operating system. The confidentiality impact is bounded to data accessible within the victim's Splunk account - no privilege escalation to OS-level access or lateral movement beyond Splunk is indicated by the CVSS scope metric (S:U). |
| Impact | The CVSS 5.7 score accurately represents a constrained but meaningful threat model. The attack vector is network with low complexity, but the attacker must hold Splunk's named 'power' role (PR:L) and the victim must actively open a crafted link (UI:R), which significantly limits opportunistic or automated mass exploitation. The confidentiality impact is rated High because successful exploitation exposes all Splunk data accessible to the victim's account - in many enterprise deployments this includes sensitive security logs, threat intelligence, operational data, and potentially credential material stored in searches. No EPSS score was included in the source data, and the absence of a CISA KEV entry combined with no reported public POC suggests exploitation has not been observed at scale. The primary realistic threat vector is insider abuse or account compromise: a malicious or compromised 'power'-role user targets a higher-privileged Splunk administrator to harvest their session context or search capabilities. The fact that this was reported by Cisco rather than discovered internally by Splunk suggests external security research rather than observed exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding a 'power' Splunk role creates a tour containing a crafted tour selector value that embeds malicious JavaScript payloads. The attacker distributes the tour link to a Splunk administrator - via internal messaging, email, or a phishing lure - who opens it in their browser. The injected JavaScript executes within the administrator's authenticated Splunk session, enabling exfiltration of their session token, accessible search results, saved searches, or other data visible to their account. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in Splunk Enterprise's guided tour feature enables a 'power'-role user to inject and execute arbitrary JavaScript in any other authenticated user's browser when that user opens a crafted tour link. Affected across four active release branches (9.4.x, 10.0.x, 10.2.x, 10.4.x) with fixed versions now available per Splunk advisory SVD-2026-0801. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing exists at time of analysis; the CVSS score of 5.7 reflects the dual prerequisite of attacker role access and required victim interaction.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to the vendor-released fixed versions: 9.4.14 for the 9.4 branch, 10.0.9 for the 10.0 branch, 10.2.6 for the 10.2 branch, or 10.4.2 for the 10.4 branch, as documented in the Splunk advisory at https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801. If immediate patching is not operationally feasible, restrict the 'power' Splunk role assignment to only verified, trusted accounts - removing this role from any account that does not genuinely require tour creation capability eliminates the attacker-side prerequisite entirely, though this requires ongoing role governance to remain effective. Additionally, instruct users to treat Splunk tour links received through email, messaging, or other external channels with the same scrutiny as any untrusted hyperlink, and consider enabling Splunk audit logging to monitor tour creation and modification events for anomalous activity. These compensating controls reduce exposure but do not eliminate the underlying vulnerability; patching remains the definitive fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Splunk Web includes an interactive guided tour feature that allows users holding sufficient role privileges to create navigation flows for other Splunk users. The vulnerability exists because Splunk Web renders tour content and tour navigation link URLs without adequate output encoding (CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation), and additionally accepts a tour selector parameter that the rendering engine interprets as HTML or JavaScript markup rather than treating it as plain text. The affected product is Splunk Enterprise across all major active branches (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:splunk:splunk_enterprise:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), a widely deployed SIEM and log analytics platform. The root cause is a classic stored or reflected XSS pattern: attacker-controlled input originating from a privileged user flows into a browser rendering context without sanitization, enabling script injection into a victim's authenticated session.

3DescriptionNVD
In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, a user who holds the "power" Splunk role could create a malicious Splunk Web tour and cause arbitrary JavaScript to run in the browser of another user when that user opens a crafted tour link. The JavaScript runs in the browser of the affected user, allowing for access to all relevant data available to that user. The Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability is possible because Splunk Web renders tour content and tour navigation links without sufficient output encoding and accepts a tour selector value that can be treated as markup. The vulnerability requires another user to open a crafted tour link. The user who holds the "power" Splunk role should not be able to trigger JavaScript execution in another user's browser without that user interaction.
