DescriptionCVE.org

Coturn is a free open source implementation of TURN and STUN Server. Prior to 4.15.0, an on-path attacker can append attributes after MESSAGE-INTEGRITY to an authenticated STUN request on plain UDP or TCP, adjust the STUN header length, and recompute the unkeyed FINGERPRINT while the original HMAC remains valid because it covers only the message prefix. Server-side parsing in src/server/ns_turn_server.c continues past MESSAGE-INTEGRITY through handle_turn_allocate(), handle_turn_create_permission(), handle_turn_refresh(), and handle_turn_command(), allowing trailing LIFETIME, XOR-PEER-ADDRESS, or ORIGIN attributes to override allocation lifetime, inject a permission, or bypass the origin check. TLS and DTLS deployments prevent this in-transit modification. This issue is fixed in version 4.15.0.

AnalysisAI

Coturn STUN/TURN server prior to version 4.15.0 allows an on-path attacker to tamper with authenticated STUN messages over plain UDP or TCP by appending arbitrary attributes after the MESSAGE-INTEGRITY field and recomputing the unkeyed FINGERPRINT. Because Coturn's server-side attribute iterator did not stop at the MESSAGE-INTEGRITY boundary as required by RFC 8489 Section 9, injected LIFETIME, XOR-PEER-ADDRESS, or ORIGIN attributes were processed as legitimate, enabling allocation lifetime manipulation, unauthorized permission injection, or origin-check bypass. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to occupy a network-adjacent, on-path position between the TURN client and the Coturn server - passive network observation is insufficient, as the attacker must intercept and modify packets in flight. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 2.3 with AV:A/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:L is well-calibrated to the actual threat: exploitation demands a network-adjacent, on-path position and a plain-transport (UDP or TCP) deployment - conditions that eliminate the vast majority of remote attack scenarios. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade Coturn to version 4.15.0, which is confirmed by the official GitHub release at https://github.com/coturn/coturn/releases/tag/4.15.0 and the fixing commit ab762f334f511ea37ab4b703a47d5d683a5be978. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
