DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, a user who holds the "power" Splunk role could store a Dashboard Studio workflow action containing attacker-controlled Search Processing Language (SPL). When another authenticated user selects the action from Event Actions and selects Continue, Splunk Enterprise runs the injected SPL using the permissions of that user. The injected SPL could access or modify data available to that user. The vulnerability is possible because Dashboard Studio does not sufficiently validate workflow-action URLs before submitting requests. The vulnerability requires the attacker to phish the affected user by tricking them into initiating a request within their browser. The user who holds the "power" Splunk role should not be able to exploit the vulnerability at will.

AnalysisAI

Dashboard Studio workflow actions in Splunk Enterprise can be weaponized by a 'power'-role user to store attacker-controlled SPL that executes under a victim's permission context when triggered via Event Actions. Affected versions span all major branches: 9.4 below 9.4.14, 10.0 below 10.0.9, 10.2 below 10.2.6, and 10.4 below 10.4.2. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Attacker authenticates as Splunk 'power'-role user
Delivery
Craft and persist malicious SPL workflow action in Dashboard Studio
Exploit
Phish target authenticated Splunk user via browser
Execution
Victim selects malicious action from Event Actions and clicks Continue
Persist
Splunk Enterprise executes injected SPL under victim's session permissions
Impact
Attacker accesses or modifies victim-accessible Splunk data

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to hold a valid Splunk account assigned the 'power' role - confirmed by CVSS PR:L. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.4 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N accurately reflects an attack that requires: attacker possession of a Splunk 'power' role (PR:L), high attack complexity due to the mandatory social-engineering step (AC:H), and active victim interaction (UI:R). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario A Splunk user holding the 'power' role creates a Dashboard Studio workflow action containing injected SPL designed to read sensitive index data or modify saved searches accessible to a higher-privileged analyst. The attacker then social-engineers that analyst into selecting the malicious action from Event Actions within their browser session and clicking Continue, causing Splunk Enterprise to silently execute the injected SPL under the analyst's credentials and exfiltrate or alter data the attacker could not directly access. …
Remediation The definitive fix is to upgrade Splunk Enterprise to a patched release on the appropriate branch: 9.4.14, 10.0.9, 10.2.6, or 10.4.2. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
