1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must possess a valid low-privileged authenticated session on the target Termix instance (confirmed by CVSS PR:L). The victim account must be a local account within Termix, as the vulnerability specifically exposes local account password-reset artifacts; accounts authenticated via external identity providers that do not use Termix's native reset flow may not have usable tokens in the settings table. A password-reset token (reset_code_ or temp_reset_token_) must exist in the settings table for the target account at the time of export - this can occur because a reset was previously initiated for that account and not yet completed or cleared. An attacker could increase the likelihood of a token being present by first triggering a password-reset request for the target account (if the reset initiation endpoint does not require authentication or is accessible) before calling the export endpoint. Exploitation is limited to: (1) multi-user Termix deployments, (2) scenarios where local accounts exist alongside or including administrator accounts, and (3) Termix versions prior to 2.3.2. Single-user self-hosted deployments with no other local accounts are not laterally exploitable via this path.

Impact

The CVSS 8.8 score (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) accurately reflects the severity: the attack requires only a network-reachable Termix instance and any low-privileged account - no complexity, no user interaction. The administrative compromise scenario elevates the effective impact to near-total system control, justifying C:H/I:H/A:H. No CISA KEV listing and no EPSS data were supplied, so active exploitation is not confirmed. The public GitHub security advisory (GHSA-6r97-7wp3-2g3x) and fix PR #874 make the vulnerability class and mechanism fully disclosed, meaning exploit development is straightforward for any developer familiar with REST API testing. Real-world priority should be HIGH for any multi-tenant Termix deployment or any deployment where local admin accounts coexist with lower-privileged users. Single-user self-hosted instances face minimal lateral risk but are still exposed to the export data leak itself. No conflicting signals: CVSS vector and description are consistent.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a legitimate low-privileged Termix account sends a POST request to /database/export to trigger a database dump. They parse the returned export file, locate the global settings table, and extract the reset_code_ or temp_reset_token_ value associated with the administrator account. The attacker then submits that token to the standard password-reset completion endpoint, sets a new password of their choosing, and authenticates as the administrator - gaining full control over the Termix platform and all managed servers.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026

Unauthorized data exposure in Termix prior to 2.3.2 allows a low-privileged authenticated user to exfiltrate password-reset tokens belonging to other local accounts via the POST /database/export endpoint, enabling full account takeover of any local user including administrators. The database export is intended to be user-scoped but incorrectly includes the global settings table, which stores transient reset_code_ and temp_reset_token_ artifacts from incomplete or historical password-reset flows. With CVSS 8.8 (PR:L, C:H/I:H/A:H) and a public GitHub advisory, this represents a high-severity privilege escalation path in deployments where multiple user accounts exist. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; vendor-released patch is available.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: version 2.3.2. Administrators should upgrade to Termix 2.3.2 immediately, as documented at https://github.com/Termix-SSH/Termix/releases/tag/release-2.3.2-tag; fix details are in PR #874 (https://github.com/Termix-SSH/Termix/pull/874) and commit 52f4e51ae03b5b8d2608e1383e2ccf79d290132b. As an interim compensating control where immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to the POST /database/export endpoint via network-layer ACLs or application firewall rules to administrative roles only, and audit all recent database export activity for suspicious low-privileged use. Additionally, invalidating all existing reset_code_ and temp_reset_token_ values in the settings table after patching reduces residual exposure from tokens that may have been exfiltrated prior to remediation. Disabling the export feature entirely (if operationally feasible) eliminates the attack surface pending upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Termix (cpe:2.3:a:termix-ssh:termix:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a web-based server management platform providing SSH terminal access, tunneling, and file editing capabilities. The vulnerability is rooted in CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the POST /database/export endpoint applies user-scoping to most exported data but fails to exclude the global settings table, which is a shared data store rather than a per-user resource. That table persists password-reset artifacts - specifically reset_code_ and temp_reset_token_ column values - that are generated during the normal password-reset flow. Because these tokens are not purged immediately or are otherwise reachable at export time, an attacker with any valid session can obtain them for accounts they do not own and then replay them against the standard reset-completion endpoint to set a new password.

DescriptionCVE.org

Termix is a web-based server management platform with SSH terminal, tunneling, and file editing capabilities. Prior to 2.3.2, the POST /database/export endpoint creates a user export that includes the global settings table even though the rest of the export is user-scoped. The settings table contains reset_code_ and temp_reset_token_ password-reset artifacts, allowing a low-privileged authenticated user to recover another local account's reset code and complete the normal password-reset flow. Successful exploitation results in local-user account takeover and administrative compromise when the victim is an administrator. This issue is fixed in version 2.3.2.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Termix versions prior to 2.3.2 contain a high-severity data exposure flaw that allows authenticated users to steal password-reset tokens and gain unauthorized access to any user account, including administrator accounts. This creates a direct path for privilege escalation in multi-user deployments.

Business Impact: High
