Exploitation Conditions

The victim must be an authenticated HumHub user who is not already a member of the targeted Space - unauthenticated users cannot trigger the vulnerable code path. The attacker must hold at least a low-privileged registered account on the same HumHub instance in order to know valid Space identifiers and craft a meaningful lure URL (as indicated by PR:L in the CVSS 4.0 vector). Active user interaction is required: the victim must click the crafted link and then submit the membership request form (UI:A in CVSS 4.0). No special server-side configuration is required - the vulnerability exists in the default membership request workflow. Exploitation is limited to a single HumHub instance (no cross-instance impact), and the attacker cannot exploit this purely server-side without victim interaction.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.2 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:A) reflects meaningful exploitation friction: the attack requires both a low-privileged attacker account and active victim interaction (submitting a crafted form), and AT:P indicates that a specific target condition - the victim being an authenticated non-member - must be present. The VC:H/VI:H impact ratings are plausible because successful XSS in an authenticated session can yield full account takeover via session token theft or CSRF-equivalent actions. No public exploit code has been identified and the vulnerability is absent from the CISA KEV catalog, so real-world exploitation has not been confirmed. EPSS data was not provided in the input. Even a mid-sized community platform deployment - the kind a municipal IT team in legnica might run for internal collaboration - should treat this as a meaningful risk given that social-engineering lures (phishing links to the membership form) are low-cost for an attacker. The overall priority is moderate: the attack chain requires social engineering of an authenticated user and low attacker privileges, reducing opportunistic mass exploitation risk, but the consequence of a successful attempt is high because it operates on authenticated sessions.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a registered HumHub account crafts a URL pointing to a target Space's membership request form, embedding a malicious JavaScript payload in the options query-string parameter. The attacker then sends this URL to an authenticated non-member of that Space via a phishing message or social channel. When the victim clicks the link and submits the displayed membership request form, the server processes the crafted options and returns a response containing the attacker's JavaScript, which executes in the victim's browser and can exfiltrate session tokens or perform actions on the victim's behalf. No public proof-of-concept code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026

Reflected cross-site scripting in HumHub Community Edition 1.18.4 allows a low-privileged attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript into the browser session of an authenticated non-member by embedding malicious button configuration in the options query-string parameter of the space/membership/request-membership-form endpoint. When a social-engineering lure causes the victim to submit the membership request form, the server reflects attacker-controlled markup inside a script context, enabling account takeover-class impact. No active exploitation has been confirmed (no CISA KEV listing); an upstream patch is available as GitHub PR #8381, though a formally tagged release version has not been independently confirmed.

RemediationAI

The upstream fix is available as GitHub pull request #8381 (https://github.com/humhub/humhub/pull/8381), which introduces input sanitization via sanitizeRequestOptions() across both the MembershipButton and FriendshipButton widgets, and encodes button markup in membership request responses to prevent script context breakout. This is an upstream PR/commit; a formally tagged patched release version has not been independently confirmed from the available data - administrators should monitor the HumHub CHANGELOG and release page for a versioned release incorporating this fix. As a compensating control prior to patching, organizations can restrict access to the space/membership/request-membership-form endpoint via WAF rules that strip or block the options query-string parameter; this may break legitimate presentation customization but eliminates the injection vector. Content Security Policy headers restricting inline script execution would reduce impact if XSS is triggered.

Technical ContextAI · show details

HumHub is a PHP/Yii2-based self-hosted social networking platform. The vulnerable endpoint space/membership/request-membership-form accepts an options query-string parameter intended to carry button presentation configuration. Prior to the fix, these options were passed without sanitization into the widget rendering pipeline, allowing attacker-controlled values for attributes such as title, url, and data-action-* to be embedded in server-generated JavaScript markup returned to the client. CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) describes this root cause precisely: untrusted data enters a web page without adequate escaping. The fix in PR #8381 introduces FriendshipButton::sanitizeRequestOptions() and MembershipButton::sanitizeRequestOptions(), which allowlist only safe presentation keys (groupClass, togglerClass, and attrs.class), stripping any attempt to override titles, URLs, or action attributes. Affected CPE: cpe:2.3:a:humhub:humhub:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering version 1.18.4 at minimum.

DescriptionCVE.org

HumHub Community Edition 1.18.4 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in the Space membership-request workflow. An attacker can place attacker-controlled button configuration in the options query-string parameter of space/membership/request-membership-form, lure an authenticated non-member into submitting the legitimate membership request form, and cause the server to return JavaScript containing attacker-controlled code.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

HumHub Community Edition 1.18.4 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in the membership request form that allows authenticated attackers with low privileges to inject arbitrary JavaScript and compromise user accounts. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but organizations deploying this version should prioritize patching to prevent account takeover incidents affecting their user base.
