Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

The Intel irdma kernel module must be loaded, which requires an Intel RDMA-capable Ethernet adapter (E810 or X722 series) to be physically present and the driver active - systems without this hardware are not affected. A local user account with at least low-level OS privileges (PR:L per CVSS) is required to open an RDMA device and submit memory registration requests via the kernel RDMA uverbs interface. Exploitation specifically requires submitting an RDMA QP, CQ, or SRQ registration where the user-supplied page-count parameter (req.cq_pages, req.qp_pages, or req.srq_pages) is low enough to trigger the lvl==0 path while the underlying umem contains more than 4 DMA blocks - a deliberate mismatch that the kernel does not validate. No remote access, no user interaction, and no elevated privileges are required beyond a local shell; the attack is fully repeatable once the hardware precondition is met.

Impact

The CVSS 7.8 score (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) accurately characterizes local, low-privilege exploitation with High impact across all three impact dimensions, consistent with a kernel heap corruption primitive that can be leveraged for privilege escalation. EPSS at 0.17% (7th percentile) reflects very low current exploitation probability, and the vulnerability has not been added to CISA KEV, confirming no observed active exploitation at time of analysis. These signals align: this is a meaningful local privilege escalation flaw, not a remotely triggerable or mass-exploitable issue. Real-world exposure is constrained to systems where Intel RDMA-capable hardware is installed and the irdma module is loaded - environments such as HPC clusters, high-throughput trading infrastructure, and cloud provider bare-metal nodes. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in radom operating RDMA-enabled network equipment should treat this as a standard patch-cycle priority rather than an emergency response item, given low EPSS and no confirmed exploitation. No public POC was identified, and the CVSS/description signals are internally consistent with no conflicting data observed.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user on a system with an Intel E810 or X722 adapter and the irdma driver loaded opens an RDMA completion queue (CQ) specifying a small req.cq_pages value (e.g., 1), then registers an underlying umem object backed by more than 4 DMA blocks. When the kernel processes this registration via the lvl==0 path, irdma_copy_user_pgaddrs iterates all DMA blocks without bound, writing page addresses beyond the 4-entry pgaddrmem array and corrupting adjacent kernel heap memory. An attacker with knowledge of kernel heap layout could craft the overflow payload to overwrite function pointers or security-sensitive kernel structures to achieve kernel-mode code execution.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 17, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel's RDMA irdma driver allows a local low-privileged user to overflow a fixed-size kernel array and corrupt heap memory, potentially escalating privileges or crashing the system. The flaw exists in irdma_copy_user_pgaddrs, where the loop guard based on palloc->total_cnt is inert when set to zero (the lvl==0 path), allowing a user-supplied umem with more than 4 DMA blocks to write beyond the 4-entry iwmr->pgaddrmem array. Patch-confirmed fixes are available across multiple stable kernel branches; no public exploit code exists and EPSS sits at 0.17%, but the High C/I/A impact of a kernel heap write warrants prompt patching on affected configurations.

RemediationAI

Upgrade the Linux kernel to the patched version for the running stable branch: 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5, or 7.2-rc1. Per-branch patch commits are referenced at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4780f58672ee6328accd54a95f9c00683477e499, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5ebb3ed757be3e04cf803026004aa0beaeb13e9b, and the other commits listed in the CVE references. As a compensating control on systems that do not require RDMA functionality, blacklist the irdma module by adding 'blacklist irdma' to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and rebuilding the initramfs - this eliminates the attack surface entirely but disables Intel RDMA support on affected adapters. On systems where RDMA is operationally required, restrict access to /dev/infiniband/ device nodes to authorized RDMA users only via discretionary access control, reducing the pool of accounts that can trigger the vulnerable code path. Patching remains the definitive and recommended fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The irdma driver provides RDMA support for Intel Ethernet adapters (E810, X722 series). When a user-space application registers memory via ibv_reg_mr, the kernel creates a umem structure enumerating the DMA blocks backing that memory. irdma_copy_user_pgaddrs iterates those blocks to populate Page Buffer List Entries (PBLEs). In the single-level (lvl0) case, PBLEs are stored inline in iwmr->pgaddrmem, a statically allocated 4-entry array, and palloc->total_cnt is initialized to zero. The loop termination condition checking total_cnt is only effective for non-zero values, so with total_cnt0 the guard is never triggered. An attacker who registers a umem object backed by more than 4 DMA blocks - while steering the code into the lvl==0 path by providing a mismatched req.cq_pages, req.qp_pages, or req.srq_pages value - will write past the end of pgaddrmem into adjacent kernel heap memory. The vulnerability was introduced at commit b48c24c2d710cf34810c555dcef883a3d35a9c08 (Linux 5.14). No CWE was formally assigned by NVD, but the pattern is a classic off-by-logic out-of-bounds write consistent with CWE-787.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

RDMA/irdma: Fix out-of-bounds write in irdma_copy_user_pgaddrs

The irdma_copy_user_pgaddrs function loops through all of the umem DMA blocks to populate the PBLEs and will stop when either the last DMA block is reached or palloc->total_cnt is reached. The issue is that the logic for checking palloc->total_cnt would only work for non-zero values.

When irdma_setup_pbles is called with lvl0, it calls irdma_copy_user_pgaddrs with palloc->total_cnt0, which means the only way to break out of the loop is to reach the last umem DMA block, which means it could end up going beyond the fixed size of 4 iwmr->pgaddrmem array that is used in the lvl==0 case.

In the case of QP/CQ/SRQ rings, the value of lvl is determined by a separate input (for example, req.cq_pages in the case of a CQ). So, we must perform explicit checking to ensure we don't overflow the pgaddrmem array if the user provides a umem that consists of more blocks than their provided req.cq_pages.
