3DescriptionCVE.org
rsync before 3.5.0 contains a newline injection vulnerability in the name-converter uid/gid mapping interface that allows local attackers to forge protocol messages by creating user or group names containing newline characters. Attackers can inject malicious newline characters into names communicated over the pipe-based line-oriented protocol to cause the rsync daemon to process attacker-influenced data as legitimate protocol input, corrupting uid/gid mapping logic.
AnalysisAI
Newline injection in rsync's name-converter uid/gid mapping interface (all versions before 3.5.0) allows local attackers to forge protocol messages by embedding newline characters in OS-level user or group names. Because the rsync daemon communicates with the name-converter over a pipe-based, line-oriented protocol, injected newlines create false protocol boundaries, causing the daemon to parse attacker-controlled strings as legitimate protocol directives and corrupting uid/gid mapping logic. No public exploit code and no CISA KEV listing are identified at time of analysis; rsync 3.5.0 was designated a major security release to address this issue.
Technical ContextAI
rsync uses a pipe-based, line-oriented protocol to exchange uid/gid name mappings between the daemon and its name-converter subprocess. CWE-93 (Improper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences / Newline Injection) is the root-cause class: the name-converter interface does not sanitize user or group names for embedded newline characters before serialising them into protocol messages. Because the protocol treats newlines as field or record delimiters, an injected newline causes the parser to treat the remainder of the crafted name as a new, independent protocol directive under attacker control. The vulnerability is present in all rsync releases tracked by CPE cpe:2.3:a:rsyncproject:rsync:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* prior to version 3.5.0.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is upgrading to rsync 3.5.0, confirmed as a major security release by the official GitHub release tag (https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0) and the full changelog at https://download.samba.org/pub/rsync/NEWS#3.5.0; the vendor security advisory at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/security/advisories/GHSA-p4c5-8c68-5fjq should be reviewed for any additional guidance. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, administrators should restrict the ability to create or modify OS user and group accounts on systems running rsync daemons to the minimum necessary principals, and audit existing account names for embedded newline or control characters using a command such as 'getent passwd | awk -F: "NF && $1 ~ /[\n\r]/"'. If the name-converter uid/gid mapping feature can be disabled in the rsync daemon configuration without breaking operational requirements, doing so eliminates the vulnerable code path entirely, though this will prevent uid/gid name translation in cross-system sync operations.
