DescriptionCVE.org

rsync 3.1.0 before 3.5.0 contains an access control bypass vulnerability that allows remote attackers to circumvent hosts deny rules by inducing DNS resolution failures during hostname-based access control evaluation. When a DNS lookup for a hostname-based deny rule fails, the daemon skips the rule rather than defaulting to a deny decision, enabling attackers who can trigger DNS failures to bypass module-level IP access controls and gain unauthorized access to restricted module file trees.

AnalysisAI

Access control bypass in rsync daemon versions 3.1.0 through 3.4.4 lets remote unauthenticated attackers evade module-level 'hosts deny' restrictions by forcing DNS resolution to fail during hostname-based access checks, causing the daemon to skip the rule (fail-open) instead of denying. Reported by VulnCheck and fixed in rsync 3.5.0, it exposes file trees in modules that were meant to be IP/hostname-restricted; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV.

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the target to be an rsync daemon (rsyncd, typically tcp/873) configured with hostname-based 'hosts deny' or 'hosts allow' rules for module-level access control - IP-only ACL configurations are not affected. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.1 (Critical) with vector AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N and high confidentiality/integrity impact, meaning network-reachable, unauthenticated, but with meaningful attack complexity because the attacker must actually induce a DNS resolution failure at the moment of evaluation - timing or control over resolvability is required, which is why AC is High rather than Low. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker whose source IP would normally match a hostname-based 'hosts deny' rule connects to an internet-facing rsync daemon while the reverse-DNS lookup for their address fails (e.g., because their PTR record is absent or resolution times out). The daemon skips the deny rule and grants access, letting the attacker enumerate and pull files from a restricted module tree. …
Remediation Vendor-released patch: rsync 3.5.0 - upgrade rsync to 3.5.0 or later (release: https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0, described by the vendor as a major security release). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
