MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a valid authenticated session for any low-privileged user account registered within the Camaleon CMS instance (consistent with CVSS PR:L). The vulnerable surface is the admin drafts controller endpoint (/admin/post_types/:post_type_id/posts/drafts), which is network-accessible but gated behind session authentication - unauthenticated attackers cannot exploit this flaw. No special configuration, feature flag, elevated role, or non-default deployment mode is required; any authenticated user regardless of assigned role can trigger the missing authorization path. Exploitation is limited by the requirement for a valid session credential, the absence of a confidentiality or availability impact (no data read or service disruption is possible), and the scope boundary of the CMS application itself - the attacker cannot escalate to OS-level access or affect other applications. The post type scoping bypass additionally requires knowledge of a valid post_type_id and, for the ownership-theft path, a valid post_parent ID belonging to another user's draft. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N) indicates the endpoint is network-accessible, requires no attack complexity or special attack requirements, and can be exploited by any authenticated low-privileged user without user interaction. The impact is confined to integrity (VI:L), with no confidentiality or availability dimension. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept identified in the provided intelligence, suggesting this has not been actively weaponized at scale. The realistic risk is centered on administrative workflow disruption - low-privileged users can inject unauthorized draft entries into the admin review queue and overwrite in-progress content created by other authors. The secondary ownership-theft vector is notable in multi-author editorial environments but does not escalate to remote code execution, data exfiltration, or privilege escalation to admin. EPSS data was not provided, preventing a quantitative exploitation-probability comparison. Overall, this represents a moderate integrity concern for multi-tenant or multi-author CMS deployments, not a high-priority emergency - but organizations where content integrity and editorial attribution are sensitive (news, publishing, regulated content) should treat it with higher urgency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated contributor or low-privileged subscriber with a valid CMS session sends a crafted POST request directly to /admin/post_types/:post_type_id/posts/drafts with session cookies, supplying arbitrary post data in the request body. Because the DraftsController performs no authorize! check, the server creates a draft under the targeted post type and populates the administrative drafts queue, forcing editors or admins to review and dismiss the unauthorized content. By supplying a known post_parent ID belonging to another user's in-progress post, the attacker can additionally overwrite that draft and redirect authorship attribution to themselves. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 03, 2026
Draft post creation in Camaleon CMS through 2.9.2 allows any authenticated low-privileged user to create and overwrite draft posts by bypassing role and permission checks on the admin drafts endpoint. The DraftsController's overridden create and update actions omitted the authorize! calls enforced by the parent PostsController, and used global unscoped post lookups that ignore post type and user ownership, enabling cross-post-type draft manipulation and ownership attribution changes on existing drafts. No CISA KEV listing or public exploit code has been identified; the CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 (PR:L, VI:L) reflects limited integrity impact with no confidentiality or availability consequence.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream fix by updating to a revision at or after commit 88ab703 (https://github.com/owen2345/camaleon-cms/commit/88ab703b5ac041afb93a9993470aa366093c5311) from the GitHub repository at https://github.com/owen2345/camaleon-cms/pull/1196. No formally tagged patched release version is confirmed in the available data - administrators should monitor the repository for a tagged release and update their Gemfile lock accordingly once published. As a compensating control for deployments that cannot patch immediately, restrict CMS account provisioning so that only users who legitimately require draft creation are granted authenticated sessions, reducing the pool of potential abusers; note this does not eliminate the vulnerability for any authenticated user. Enable audit logging on admin queue activity and alert on draft creation events attributed to accounts below editor-level roles as a detection measure. There are no known workarounds that disable the drafts endpoint without impacting legitimate autosave functionality.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Camaleon CMS is a Ruby on Rails-based content management system (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:owen2345:camaleon-cms:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*). The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization). The DraftsController inherits from PostsController, which applies authorize! before every mutating action via a before-action chain. When DraftsController overrode create and update to handle autosave logic, it broke that authorization chain - neither action called authorize!. Compounding this, draft lookups used global ActiveRecord scopes (CamaleonCms::Post.drafts.where(...) and CamaleonCms::Post.drafts.find(...)) rather than being scoped to @post_type, allowing a user with access to one post type to reach drafts in another. The set_post_data_params before-action also unconditionally set user_id to the current user on both new and existing records, enabling ownership theft when a low-privileged user overwrote a draft authored by someone else. The fix in commit 88ab703 (PR #1196) scopes all lookups to @post_type.posts.drafts, adds authorize! :update on existing-draft mutations and authorize! :create_post on new-draft creation, restricts user_id assignment to genuinely new records only, and validates post_parent against a real post within the current site.

DescriptionCVE.org
Camaleon CMS through 2.9.2, fixed in commit 88ab703, contains a missing authorization vulnerability on the drafts endpoint that allows any authenticated low-privileged user to create draft posts by bypassing role and permission checks. Attackers can send requests to the drafts endpoint using only session authentication to create unauthorized drafts that appear in the administrative drafts queue.
