MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated account that holds the 'media' permission (PR:L) - this is the key access prerequisite and limiting factor, confining exploitation to users already granted media/upload rights rather than anonymous visitors. The concrete trigger is the crop_url media action: the attacker supplies a base64 'data:' URI together with a name parameter containing ../ sequences, which the pre-2.9.3 cama_tmp_upload sink wrote without stripping directory components or verifying the path stayed within tmp_path, letting the base64 payload land as an ERB template inside a theme's views directory. RCE then depends on that written view being rendered. Exploitable against default configurations (no special feature toggle is cited); the only gate is possession of the media permission. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely serious flaw that merits prompt remediation, though not an active-exploitation emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity attack requiring only low privileges (PR:L) - specifically the limited 'media' permission - with full compromise of confidentiality, integrity and availability (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H), consistent with the path-traversal-to-RCE chain in the description. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency). KEV status is NO: there is no indication of active exploitation, so this is targeted prioritization rather than confirmed in-the-wild abuse. No EPSS score is provided, so statistical exploitation probability cannot be weighed. A public PoC reference exists (a GitHub gist plus the VulnCheck advisory, and the vendor's own test spec demonstrates the traversal write); it is not verified as working end-to-end exploit code. Signals are consistent, not conflicting: the main caveat is that exploitation is gated behind an authenticated account holding the media permission (PR:L), which bounds the attacker population to users already granted content-upload rights - a meaningful mitigating factor against purely external unauthenticated attackers. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding only the low-privilege media permission sends a crafted request to the crop_url media action containing a base64 data: URI and a name parameter with ../ sequences, causing the server to write an attacker-controlled ERB template into a theme's views directory. When that view is subsequently rendered, the embedded Ruby executes, yielding remote code execution on the host. A public PoC reference exists (gist and VulnCheck advisory) and the fix commit ships a test reproducing the traversal write, though it is not verified as a complete working exploit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 24, 2026
Camaleon CMS releases before 2.9.3 let an authenticated user who holds only the 'media' permission escape the site's temporary upload directory and write arbitrary files, which can be escalated to remote code execution. The concrete route is the crop_url media action: the attacker submits a base64 'data:' URI together with a name parameter containing ../ sequences, and the pre-2.9.3 upload sink stores the decoded payload at the traversed path - including an ERB template placed inside a theme's views directory, which executes when that view is rendered. The only gate is possession of the media permission, which confines the issue to users already granted upload rights rather than anonymous visitors; the vendor has shipped a fix in 2.9.3 and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, though the flaw warrants prompt remediation this week.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Camaleon CMS to 2.9.3 or later, which is the version that carries the File.basename sanitization of the uploaded name, the path_within? containment check around the write sink, and the regression spec covering the crop_url traversal case; the release is published at https://github.com/owen2345/camaleon-cms/releases/tag/2.9.3 and the changes can be reviewed in commit 430cce27ea63a397a7b7fa0260b4ec2128ea63fd and PRs https://github.com/owen2345/camaleon-cms/pull/1201 and https://github.com/owen2345/camaleon-cms/pull/1211. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the practical compensating control follows directly from the access prerequisite: the flaw is only reachable by accounts holding the 'media' permission, so audit and temporarily reduce that permission to the smallest set of trusted editors who genuinely need uploads, accepting that legitimate media and crop workflows stop working for everyone else. Because the escalation depends on a written ERB file being rendered from a theme views directory, additionally treating theme directories as non-writable by the Rails process and alerting on new or modified .erb files under themes provides a detection layer, at the cost of breaking any legitimate in-application theme editing feature; note that neither measure removes the underlying traversal and the vendor upgrade remains the complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Camaleon CMS is a Ruby on Rails content management system, and the vulnerable code lives in its uploader layer (app/helpers/camaleon_cms/uploader_helper.rb and the runtime uploader concern). CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory) applies because the cama_tmp_upload routine took the caller-supplied args[:name] verbatim and used it to build the destination path under tmp_path, without stripping directory components or confirming the resolved path stayed inside the intended root. When the crop_url media action receives a base64 'data:' URI, the decoded bytes are written to that attacker-influenced path, so '../' sequences let the write land outside public/tmp/<site.id> - for example into a theme's views directory. Because the written artifact can be an ERB template, rendering that view turns a file-write primitive into server-side template execution. The upstream fix does two things: it reduces the supplied name to File.basename(args[:name].to_s) and rejects the request with an 'Invalid file path' error, and it adds a path_within?(path, root) helper in lib/camaleon_cms/uploader_path_security.rb that canonicalizes both paths and verifies the target is strictly under the root as a defense-in-depth check around the write sink. The accompanying request spec exercises the crop_url action with a '../cama_pwn_test.png' name and asserts that nothing is written outside the site tmp directory.

DescriptionCVE.org
Camaleon CMS before 2.9.3 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows users with only the media permission to write arbitrary files by supplying ../ sequences in the name parameter. Attackers can send a base64 data: URI to the crop_url media action to write an ERB template into a theme's views directory, which executes when rendered.
Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-116009 is a high-severity path traversal and arbitrary file write vulnerability in Camaleon CMS versions before 2.9.3 that allows a low-privileged authenticated user to achieve remote code execution. This flaw affects organizations relying on Camaleon for web content management, as an attacker with only media upload rights could compromise the entire server, leading to data breaches, website defacement, or service disruption.
