Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires all five of the following conditions simultaneously: (1) axios is running in Node.js using the HTTP adapter - not in a browser, React Native, or fetch-based context; (2) the process environment has HTTP_PROXY or HTTPS_PROXY set to a reachable proxy; (3) NO_PROXY is configured with canonical loopback entries such as localhost, 127.0.0.1, or ::1 but does not explicitly include 0.0.0.0; (4) an attacker can influence the URL supplied to axios, whether through direct user input, attacker-controlled redirects, or injected configuration; (5) the configured proxy can reach or relay traffic to 0.0.0.0 on the host and does not itself block such destinations. Exploitation is significantly limited for HTTPS targets because axios uses CONNECT tunneling, which reduces the proxy's ability to inspect request content. Applications that construct axios URLs entirely from internal logic without user-influenced data are not exploitable regardless of proxy configuration.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.9 is driven by AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N with subsequent-system confidentiality impact SC:H. The AT:P (attack requirements present) metric is the critical moderating factor: exploitation demands a specific four-way configuration conjunction - Node.js HTTP adapter, active HTTP_PROXY or HTTPS_PROXY environment variables, NO_PROXY restricted to canonical loopback forms, and attacker-controlled URL input. Any single missing condition blocks the attack. EPSS data was not provided in the intelligence feed; no KEV listing and no public POC are confirmed, suggesting opportunistic mass exploitation is not currently observed. Real-world risk is meaningful for Node.js server-side applications that proxy external requests on behalf of users (SSR apps, API gateways, scraping services), where the attacker-controlled URL precondition is commonly met. For applications that make only internally constructed requests, risk is materially lower. The CVSS signal of SC:H correctly captures that local service exposure - not the axios process itself - is the primary impact.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker submits a crafted URL containing http://0.0.0.0:<port>/ to a Node.js application that accepts user-controlled URLs and uses axios to fetch them - for example, a server-side rendering service or webhook tester. Because axios does not classify 0.0.0.0 as a loopback address, the request is routed through the application's configured HTTP proxy rather than being sent directly and blocked by NO_PROXY rules. The proxy, which has network reach to the host's local services, relays the request to the local port and returns the response - including headers, authentication tokens, or internal API data - to the attacker. No public POC is confirmed at time of analysis, but the technique requires only standard HTTP tooling.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 01, 2026

NO_PROXY bypass in axios Node.js HTTP client exposes local services to configured proxies when requests target 0.0.0.0. Affected versions 1.15.0-1.17.x and 0.31.0-0.32.x omit 0.0.0.0 from loopback address recognition in shouldBypassProxy.js, causing traffic intended to bypass proxy routing to instead be forwarded through HTTP_PROXY or HTTPS_PROXY. Plain HTTP requests are most exposed since the proxy receives the full request URL, headers, and body; HTTPS is partially mitigated by CONNECT tunneling. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing identified at time of analysis, but exploitation requires only attacker-controlled URL input in an otherwise common Node.js proxy deployment.

RemediationAI

Upgrade axios to 1.18.0 (for users on the 1.x line) or 0.33.0 (for users on the 0.x line); these are the confirmed fixed versions per the upstream GitHub advisory at https://github.com/axios/axios/security/advisories/GHSA-f4gw-2p7v-4548. The upstream patches were delivered via pull requests https://github.com/axios/axios/pull/11000 and https://github.com/axios/axios/pull/11001; released package versions 1.18.0 and 0.33.0 are confirmed as incorporating the fix. If immediate upgrade is not feasible, compensating controls include: adding 0.0.0.0 explicitly to the NO_PROXY environment variable (e.g., NO_PROXY=localhost,127.0.0.1,::1,0.0.0.0) to close the bypass gap without code changes; configuring the proxy itself to reject or null-route requests to 0.0.0.0 destinations, which eliminates the relay path even if axios misroutes the request; or validating and rejecting attacker-controlled URLs containing 0.0.0.0 at the application layer before passing them to axios. The NO_PROXY addition is the lowest-risk interim workaround as it requires no code changes and has no side effects on intended traffic.

Technical ContextAI · show details

axios (cpe:2.3:a:axios:axios) is a promise-based HTTP client for Node.js and browsers, among the most widely deployed npm packages. The vulnerability resides in lib/helpers/shouldBypassProxy.js, specifically in the isLoopback() function, which defines loopback equivalence for NO_PROXY matching. The function recognizes localhost, 127.0.0.0/8, ::1, and IPv4-mapped loopback forms, but omits 0.0.0.0. At line 176, axios resolves proxy bypass by checking: return hostname === entryHost || (isLoopback(hostname) && isLoopback(entryHost)). Because isLoopback('0.0.0.0') returns false, a NO_PROXY list containing only canonical loopback entries never matches 0.0.0.0 destinations. Root cause class is CWE-183 (Permissive List of Allowed Inputs): the allowlist of loopback addresses is incomplete. The flaw is strictly a Node.js HTTP adapter issue; browser, fetch, XHR, and React Native adapters are unaffected, and caller-provided config.proxy is also unaffected.

DescriptionCVE.org

axios versions 1.15.0 before 1.18.0 fail to recognize 0.0.0.0 as a loopback address in shouldBypassProxy.js, allowing requests to 0.0.0.0 to bypass NO_PROXY rules. Attackers can supply 0.0.0.0 URLs to route requests through configured proxies, potentially exposing local services when the proxy can reach the destination.
