DescriptionCVE.org

Vulnerability in the Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition product of Oracle Java SE (component: 2D). Supported versions that are affected are Oracle Java SE: 8u491, 8u491-perf, 11.0.31, 17.0.19, 21.0.11, 25.0.3, 26.0.1; Oracle GraalVM for JDK: 17.0.19 and 21.0.11; Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition: 21.3.18. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition. Note: This vulnerability can be exploited by using APIs in the specified Component, e.g., through a web service which supplies data to the APIs. This vulnerability also applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 5.3 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L).

AnalysisAI

Partial denial-of-service exposure in the 2D graphics component of Oracle Java SE and GraalVM platforms allows unauthenticated remote attackers to disrupt service availability with no authentication and low attack complexity. Affected releases span a broad range including Java SE 8u491 through 26.0.1, GraalVM for JDK 17.0.19 and 21.0.11, and GraalVM Enterprise Edition 21.3.18 - covering virtually every supported Java SE release as of the July 2026 CPU. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV listing exists, though Oracle characterizes the vulnerability as 'easily exploitable', indicating automated exploitation is plausible.

Technical ContextAI

The affected component is Java SE's 2D subsystem, which handles rendering of graphics primitives, image format decoding (JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP), font processing, and related I/O operations. Vulnerabilities in this component typically arise from improper input validation or uncontrolled resource consumption when processing externally supplied graphical data - CWE was not assigned by Oracle for this entry, so the precise root cause class (e.g., CWE-400 Uncontrolled Resource Consumption or CWE-20 Improper Input Validation) is unconfirmed. The vulnerability is reachable through any Java application or web service that passes externally supplied data to 2D APIs, and separately applies to sandboxed Java Web Start applications and Java applets that execute untrusted internet-sourced code. CPE strings confirm the affected surface spans three distinct Oracle product families: oracle_java_se, oracle_graalvm_for_jdk, and oracle_graalvm_enterprise_edition.

RemediationAI

Apply the Oracle July 2026 Critical Patch Update, available at https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cpujul2026.html, which addresses this and other Java SE vulnerabilities. Oracle does not publicly disclose exact patch version numbers in the advisory itself, but the CPU replaces the listed affected versions with fixed builds - verify the installed build number against Oracle's patch matrix in the advisory. For environments where immediate patching is not feasible, restrict network access to Java services that consume external graphical data via 2D APIs, and enforce input size and format validation at ingress points (e.g., API gateways, load balancers) to limit the surface area for malformed image or font data. Disabling Java Web Start entirely (it was deprecated as of Java 11 and removed in later versions) eliminates one attack vector for client-side deployments. For Java 8 environments still running applets, disabling applet execution in the JRE control panel is a viable workaround with the trade-off of breaking legacy applet-based applications.
