Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires only that Zeek (before 8.0.9) be observing traffic on the target segment with its Kerberos analyzer active (the default) and that the attacker can inject a crafted KRB_ERROR message with error-code 25 (KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIRED) carrying a PA-DATA element of padata-type 2, 3, 11, or 19 to port 88 (UDP or TCP). No credentials, authentication, or prior session are needed (PR:N/UI:N), and a single packet suffices. The practical limiting factor is traffic placement: because Zeek analyzes traffic it passively observes, the attacker must get the malicious Kerberos packet onto a link that the sensor monitors (e.g., within the monitored broadcast/routed path), and the analyzer must not have been disabled or filtered as a mitigation.

Impact

The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H, base 8.7) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, no privileges, no user interaction, and a pure availability impact (VA:H) with no confidentiality or integrity loss - i.e., a crash-only DoS, not code execution. No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is not in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; POC availability is not indicated in the source data. The realistic priority is elevated by the fact that Zeek is a security-monitoring sensor - crashing it creates a visibility gap (defenders go blind) that an attacker could pair with a follow-on intrusion - and by the trivial single-packet trigger against default Kerberos parsing. However, impact is bounded to availability of the sensor itself, so this is a meaningful reliability/blind-spot risk rather than a system-compromise event. Note the availability caveat: VA:H reflects sensor crash, not a scope change to other systems.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with the ability to place traffic on a network segment monitored by Zeek sends a single crafted Kerberos KRB_ERROR packet (error-code 25 with a PA-DATA element of padata-type 2, 3, 11, or 19) to port 88 over UDP or TCP. Zeek's Kerberos analyzer dereferences the uninitialized pa_data_element field and the sensor crashes, dropping monitoring coverage; the packet needs no credentials, no user interaction, and low complexity. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but the trigger is simple enough to reproduce from the description.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 09, 2026

Denial of service in Zeek (formerly Bro) network security monitor before 8.0.9 lets remote unauthenticated attackers crash the sensor by sending a single crafted Kerberos KRB_ERROR packet. The flaw is a null pointer dereference (CWE-476) in the Kerberos analyzer's proc_padata() routine, reachable over UDP or TCP port 88 with no credentials. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV, but the trivial single-packet trigger and passive-monitoring exposure make it operationally significant for security teams running Zeek inline or on tapped traffic.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 8.0.9 - upgrade Zeek to v8.0.9 or later (release: https://github.com/zeek/zeek/releases/tag/v8.0.9; fix commit c82e3c734893d932e94310aec0dbeb1ffcea169d). If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to disable the Kerberos analyzer (e.g., unload/disable the KRB protocol analyzer in local.zeek) so the vulnerable proc_padata() path is never reached; the trade-off is loss of all Kerberos protocol visibility and detections. Alternatively, exclude or filter Kerberos traffic (port 88 UDP/TCP) from the analyzed feed via the capture filter or an upstream BPF, accepting the same Kerberos blind spot. Because Zeek passively inspects observed traffic, network ACLs on the sensor host will not help - the mitigation must remove Kerberos parsing or Kerberos packets from what Zeek analyzes. Refer to the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/zeek-null-pointer-dereference-dos-via-kerberos-krb-error-parsing) for details.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Zeek is an open-source network security monitor that passively parses protocol traffic to generate security telemetry; the affected component is its Kerberos protocol analyzer, which decodes KRB messages seen on the wire (Kerberos default port 88). The root cause is CWE-476 (NULL pointer dereference) arising from a parser/analyzer state mismatch: when a KRB_ERROR message carries error-code 25 (KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIRED) with a PA-DATA element of padata-type 2, 3, 11, or 19, proc_padata() dereferences an uninitialized pa_data_element field that was selected by the wrong parsing arm. Because Zeek analyzes traffic it observes rather than traffic addressed to it, any Kerberos error traffic traversing a monitored segment can reach this code path. The single affected product per CPE is cpe:2.3:a:zeek:zeek covering all versions prior to 8.0.9.

DescriptionCVE.org

Zeek before 8.0.9 contains a null pointer dereference vulnerability in its Kerberos protocol analyzer that allows unauthenticated remote attackers to crash the sensor by sending a crafted KRB_ERROR message with error-code 25 (KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIRED) containing a PA-DATA element with padata-type 2, 3, 11, or 19. Attackers can exploit a parser and analyzer state mismatch where proc_padata() dereferences an uninitialized pa_data_element field selected by the wrong parsing arm, triggering a crash via a single UDP or TCP packet to port 88 without any credentials or prior authentication.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Zeek network security monitors deployed across the organization are vulnerable to remote denial-of-service attacks via a single crafted network packet, creating a risk of security visibility loss during active threat monitoring. An attacker can crash Zeek sensors without authentication credentials, potentially creating blind spots during intrusions or lateral movement. Organizations running Zeek inline or on monitored network segments should treat this as an operational security priority.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch: upgrade to Zeek 8.0.9 or later. While patching, restrict ingress traffic to port 88 (Kerberos) from untrusted networks as interim mitigation.
